ARIZONA ORTHOPEDIC PHYSICAL THERAPY: Attention Baby ...

Attention Baby Boomers: Stay Healthy While Staying Fit

?Sixty is the new 40,? say many early baby boomers celebrating their 60th birthday this year.

This generation of 76 million people born between 1946 and 1964, determined to ward off aging, has focused more on exercise and wellness than did their parents. They were at the forefront of the aerobics and fitness movement that began in the 1970s and are now flocking to health clubs in even greater numbers.

But, as a result, increasing numbers are suffering from ?Boomeritis? ? the phenomenon of boomers becoming injured while exercising and playing sports at a level often too intense for their aging bodies.

Sound familiar?

It?s not just about soreness or stiffness. As boomers refuse to let injuries get in the way of their exercise routines, they?re undergoing complex knee and hip replacements and surgical repairs to the shoulder, ankle and elbow. Orthopedic surgeons say they are performing such surgeries more often on patients in their 40s and 50s than in the past.

Physical therapists are also treating more boomer patients than ever, not only for rehab after injuries and surgeries, but also for customized fitness training geared to their musculoskeletal limitations.

Staying healthy and avoiding injuries

If you?re a boomer, regular exercise is key to preventing or improving chronic conditions that come with increasing age. But you may need to make some modifications to avoid injuries.

Here are some tips for staying healthy and avoiding injury ? at any age.

  • Moderate cardiovascular exercise will improve the quality of your life, but be sure to get screened by a physician first.
  • Exercise at a pace appropriate for your age. Adjust your activities and know that you have limitations: You may only be able to get your heart rate up so high, you may have joints that are not as flexible, or you may have arthritis.
  • Seek the advice of physical therapists to work on your flexibility, strength, endurance and posture. You need to know what posture to have while sitting at a computer, as well as how to set your computer station ergonomically to reduce the risk of neck, shoulder and hand injuries.
  • Stretch on a daily basis. Try to incorporate gentle stretches for your neck, back, arms and legs. Hold each stretch 15-30 seconds and do 3 repetitions each.
  • Perform gradual strengthening exercises. Begin with light weights, 10 repetitions with 2-3 sets, and gradually increase the resistance.
  • Eat well-balanced meals with protein at each meal, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Drink eight glasses of water daily.
  • A loss of mobility following injury, hospitalization, or even sustained sitting positions at work can speed the deterioration of muscles, joints and bone. A physical therapist can help you regain mobility and improve quality of movement.
  • Exercise mentally, not just physically, by doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, Scrabble and other mind games.

How to Boot From a CD or USB Drive on Any PC

How to Boot From a CD or USB Drive on Any PCOccasionally, if you're troubleshooting your PC or installing a new operating system, you'll have to "boot it from a disc" or USB flash drive. Here's what that means, and how to do it.

When you press the power button on your computer, it boots up from its internal hard drive, where your operating system (usually Windows, OS X, or Linux) is stored. But sometimes, you need to boot into something different. Maybe you need to boot from your Windows installation disc to reinstall Windows, or perhaps you need to boot from a system rescue disc to solve a problem with your machine. When you're told to boot from a CD or USB drive, here's what you need to do.

On a Windows PC

Every Windows PC is different, but once you get into your system's boot menu you should be able to find what you're looking for. To boot from a CD or USB drive:

  1. Restart your computer and wait for that first screen to pop up. Often, it'll say something like "Press F12 to Choose Boot Device" somewhere on the screen. Press that key now.
  2. Give it a moment to continue booting, and you should see a menu pop up with a list of choices on it. Highlight your CD or USB drive and press Enter.

Alternatively, you can set your computer to always check for a bootable CD or USB drive. That way, when you have one inserted, it'll boot from it automatically, and when you don't, it'll head into your regular operating system. To set this up, follow these instructions:

  1. Restart your computer and watch for the first screen that shows up when you boot. You should see something that says "Press DEL to enter setup," or something similar. Press the noted key on your keyboard and wait for setup to start.
  2. How to Boot From a CD or USB Drive on Any PCYou should see a new screen pop up, called your BIOS. This is where you set a lot of low-level settings for your computer. Look through the options (being careful not to change anything) for a setting called "Boot Device," "Boot Order," or something similar. Select that option.
  3. From the menu that pops up, choose your computer's disc drive and press Enter. If you're trying to boot from a USB drive, choose USB-HDD instead and press Enter. Depending on your BIOS, you may need to use the Page Up and Page Down keys to move your selection to the top of a list, instead.
  4. Exit out of your BIOS, saving your changes. Usually, this option is under "Exit" on the main menu, or available via a keyboard shortcut listed somewhere on your screen.
  5. Your computer should reboot. Make sure your CD or USB drive is in your computer. If you're prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD," do so. Your computer should boot into the CD or USB drive instead of your normal operating system.

From there, you can follow the instructions on-screen to install Windows, troubleshoot issues, or do whatever else it is you need to do. Image by TechnoGeek95.

On a Mac

Booting from CD or USB is very, very easy on a Mac. All you need to do is:

  1. Reboot your computer. When the white screen first shows up and you hear the startup chime, press and hold the "Option" key.
  2. How to Boot From a CD or USB Drive on Any PCYou should see a list of drives show up. On the right, you'll find your CD or USB drive, listed with its name under it. Use your arrow keys or your mouse to highlight that drive, then press Enter or click on the arrow below it.

From there, your computer will boot into the CD or USB drive instead of OS X, and you can do whatever it is you need to do following the instructions on-screen.

It's a pretty simple process once you get used to it, and it can be immensely useful if you're taking the maintenance of your computer into your own hands.

NVIDIA details how its Jetson development kit puts a Tegra in your car

Developing a high-end in-car infotainment system can present challenges that don't exist in other platforms -- you're juggling core car systems, a myriad of sensors and media playback in a testbed on wheels. NVIDIA has just explained how it's uniting those elements with its new, lengthily-titled Jetson Automotive Development Platform. While it looks like a single-DIN car stereo laid bare, the configurable kit incorporates a Tegra processor (for usual infotainment functions), multiple car-friendly interfaces and a Kepler-based graphics chipset that can power car detection, lane departure and other computer vision systems by using CUDA or OpenCV code. The net effect should be a much simpler development process: automakers can consolidate some of their test hardware in one Jetson unit that they can upgrade or swap out if newer technology comes along. NVIDIA isn't naming the handful of designers and suppliers that are already building car electronics using Jetson, although history offers a few possible candidates.

(AP) ? The Syrian president vowed on Friday to rid the country of Muslim extremists whom he blamed for a suicide blast the previous evening that killed dozens of people, including a top Sunni preacher who was a staunch supporter of Bashar Assad.

And in a warning to rebels battling to topple his regime, the Syrian leader pledged that his troops will "wipe out" and clean the country of the "forces of darkness."

Assad's statement came as the Syrian Health Ministry raised the death toll from the Thursday night bombing in Damascus to 49, after seven of the wounded died overnight in hospital.

In the attack, a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in the heart of the Syrian capital, killing Sheikh Mohammad Said Ramadan al-Buti as he was giving a sermon. The blast also wounded 84 people.

It was one of the most stunning assassinations of the two-year civil war and marked a new low in the conflict: while suicide bombings blamed on Islamic extremists fighting with the rebels have become common, the latest attack was the first time a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a mosque. The grandson of the 84-year-old al-Buti was among those killed in the attack.

In the statement carried by Syria's state SUNA news agency, Assad said al-Buti represented true Islam in facing "the forces of darkness and extremist" ideology.

"Your blood and your grandson's, as well as that of all the nation's martyrs will not go in vain because we will continue to follow your thinking to wipe out their darkness and clear our country of them," said Assad.

Syria's crisis started in March 2011 as peaceful protests against Assad's authoritarian rule. The revolt turned into a civil war as some opposition supporters took up arms the fight a harsh government crackdown on dissent. The U.N. says more than 70,000 people have been killed since.

It was not immediately clear when al-Buti's funeral would take place. The government declared Saturday as a day of mourning and state-run Syrian TV halted its regular programs on Friday to air readings from the Muslim holy book, the Quran, as well as speeches of the late cleric.

Al-Buti was the most senior religious figure to be killed in Syria's civil war and his slaying was a major blow to Assad. The preacher had been a vocal supporter of the regime since the early days of Assad's father and predecessor, the late President Hafez Assad, providing a Sunni cover and legitimacy to their rule. Sunnis are the majority sect in Syria while Assad is from the minority Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

In a speech earlier this month, al-Buti had said it was "a religious duty to protect the values, the land and the nation" of Syria. "There is no difference between the army and the rest of the nation," he said at the time ? a clear endorsement of Assad's forces in their effort to crush the rebels.

The mosque bombing was also among the most serious security breaches in Damascus. In July, an attack that targeted a high-level government crisis meeting killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

Last month, a car bomb that struck in the same area, which houses the headquarters of Syria's ruling Baath party, killed at least 53 people and wounded more than 200.

Bobby Brown was in jail for less than a day.

Well, that was fast. Bobby Brown has been released from a California jail after serving less than a day behind bars stemming from his October DUI arrest, E! News confirms.

"He is presently home with family," his reps said in a statement.

The New Jack Swinger surrendered just Wednesday in a Van Nuys, Calif., court to begin serving was supposed to be a 55-day sentence after pleading no contest last month to driving under the influence and to driving on a suspended license.

Bobby Brown begins serving jail sentence for DUI bust

However, because of prison overcrowding, it was the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's prerogative to let the 44-year-old Brown out early to begin his four-year summary probation, which includes an 18-month alcohol education program among other requirements.

And that's just fine by him.

"Mr. Brown has accepted responsibility for what occurred last October 2012. Mr. Brown is pleased that the matter has been resolved and to be home with his wife and young son," added his attorney, Christopher Brown.

The "Every Little Step" singer and ex-husband of Whitney Houston was collared on Oct. 24 after police caught him weaving between lanes and pulled him over. It was his second DUI bust in less than a year after he was previously popped in March 2012 in the San Fernando Valley. That case also ended in a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor DUI charge.
