Music.Photo.Life.: HTC One Review: Beautiful Innovation

After reviewing so many smartphones over the years, HTC One is the first device that makes me enjoy sharing my images and videos. If HTC One can make a person like me who shares only about 3 photos a week to post dozens over the past 7 days, imagine what it could do to the social-happy ones out there. HTC One makes it fun to capture and share your life's images without breaking your mobile data plan.

HTC One offers a top benchmark score of 11955 with Quadrant, an amazingly 60% higher than Sony Xperia Z. I know different benchmark apps offer different scores, but this is just a guide to demonstrate the immense power the HTC One offers. Indeed, we take for granted how all the ?HTC One apps are executed in a snap, and it certainly can't do it without an efficient processor.

Design
HTC One design is one of the major talking points. Its manufacturing process of fusing the aluminium and plastic parts without gaps requires 200 minutes. The plastic areas are critical to allow wireless signals to be transmitted, something that most of us consumers took for granted. To add to the challenge, the HTC One's rear face is curved to fit nicely on our hands. Thanks to HTC engineering, the HTC One is both beautiful and functional. The silver colour is recommended as it looks more striking, while the black colour will be preferred for users who prefer the understated, though fingerprint marks appear more visible on the metal surface.

Display
HTC One has a full-HD 4.7-inch display, offering the highest pixel-per-inch among the major competitors. The display produces natural-looking colours without over-saturation. It has excellent wide viewing angle without loss of contrast.

I compared the display with Samsung Galaxy S3 ("Natural" color mode), and HTC One appears brighter with better colour details.

Easy Phone Migration
It is a lot easier to migrate from your old Android phone to HTC One. This app provide step-by-step instructions to copy your phone contacts, settings, messages, bookmarks, etc. to your new HTC One, using Wi-Fi Direct protocol to connect and deliver fast data transfer speed. Transferring from iPhone is also possible using HTC Sync Manager which runs on your computer.

4MP UltraPixel Camera
HTC has taken a very bold step to reduce the pixel count of the camera on their flagship product. To compensate the lower pixel count, HTC claims that the camera captures more details in low light situations.

Here are some real life comparison shots with Samsung Galaxy S3.

HTC One is able to capture better low-light images in Auto mode. For S3, I would need to manually enable the Night mode before achieve the same results. The auto white balance for both phones vary depending on the scenes: for warm indoor lighting, HTC One handles better, while for outdoor lighting, the S3 can achieve more accurate white balance.

Thanks to the uncluttered camera app which starts up within a second, capturing both still and moving images is straightforward. 2 separate still and video camera shutter buttons lets you easily trigger either shooting modes quickly. Press and hold the still image will enable the continuous shooting mode up to 20 images. A dedicated effects icon allows you to select fun effects without going through the hassle of searching in the menu. Slide the finger across the screen to switch camera front-to-back.

As much as I would like to believe HTC's marketing for their UltraPixel camera, the lower pixel count does not deliver dramatic improvements for low light shots. Without pixel-peeping, the images are above average for a phone with good colour and contrast details, though nowhere near compact camera quality. But I come to my conclusion that there is one important reason for reducing pixel count: to implement innovative features that work more efficiently with smaller file sizes.

And that feature is feature is Zoe.

HTC Zoe
What is Zoe? It brings your photo gallery to life. When you shoot with Zoe, you capture 20 consecutive still images and a 3-second video at the same time. With Zoe, you can then perform magic on your post-editing process, like making sure group shots are perfect by swapping faces with different images, or removing unwanted moving objects.

This feature alone is nothing fantastic, not until you use the next feature: Video Highlights. HTC One instinctively picks your still images and Zoe and creates a 30-second video clip, synchronised with pre-canned music and effects. Zoe knows which images to use by selecting those from the same location.

To top it all up, HTC lets you easily share your individual images and highlights on HTC Share portal for free. Each set of event highlights and images reside in a unique URL which is available for 180 days.

I really love Zoe, and for all camera lovers out there, this is an excellent way to share your images to family and friends. Even if I don't post online, I could also generate the Video Highlights for every event I attended and store it as a daily archive of my life snippets.

Stereo Speakers
For decades, we have learned to accept that our smartphones produce mono sounds from a single speaker, either at the back or at the sides. HTC finally breaks out from the mould in 2 aspects: one, they put the speakers to the front; two, there are 2 speakers producing stereo audio. It changes the experience: video clips now sound clearer and with better stereo effects. While in the past we tend to increase the volume to compensate the muffled speakers behind the phone, HTC One ringtones sound loud and clear when placed on the surface.

To let you enjoy the music experience, HTC One's music app retrieves the song lyrics via LyricFind and flashes the lyrics on-cue, with GraceNote providing the album art. And as the app plays on the background, you can control the tracks in the notification dropdown menu.

It would be even better if the stereo speakers can swap the left-right audio channels based on the phone orientation: for now, the top speaker plays left channel while the lower speaker plays the right channel. And if oriented at portrait mode, the speakers should play in mono. Just a suggestion to delight the user.

HTC BlinkFeed?
To think that BlinkFeed is just like Flipboard is an understatement. BlinkFeed also populates in-phone content like calendar events and TV programmes. Experienced users might not find it as customisable or user friendly as third party apps, but to a new user, BlinkFeed is an excellent way to receive news as it integrates to the home screen. It is good for lazy people like myself who doesn't like to keep opening news apps throughout the day.

Sense TV
HTC One is one of the first smartphones that includes an infra-red transmitter. The included TV app works well. The process of the app identifying the correct home TV and Cable box remote commands is easy, as long as you use the common product brands. And once done, channel surfing becomes so much more fun. I can browse the channel synopses on the HTC One, tap on the thumbnail, and the HTC One beams the remote commands to change the channel. I can also set reminders for TV programmes.

Note though, that you should point the HTC One towards the cable set-top box before you select the channel. If not, the HTC One remote might not beam the complete set of IR commands to the devices, for instance, if your cable TV channels are 3 digits.

Not All Is Perfect
For every product, there are always features (or lack of) that irks the user. For HTC One, there is just one. The Power Button is located at the top left corner which is not easy to reach for left-handers like me. And the fact that the button is flushed against the corners means the finger can't feel the button. I find myself missing it and pressing next to it at times. Same can be said for the volume rockers.

Another minor irk would be the redesigned HTC Sense 5.0 user interface. Its has a different way of managing your icons unfamiliar to even seasoned Android users. Plus the fact that there are only 2 touch-sensitive buttons (recent apps button is activated by double-tapping the Home button), any new HTC One user should visit the Tips and Help app regularly to learn how to use many of the features. Once I got past the initial hurdle, the rest is easy. And for iPhone users and Android users who prefer the iPhone way of displaying all apps, HTC One's app drawer view can be set as a permanent home screen.

HTC One Moves My Memories
If you love capturing memories on photos and video, then HTC One will delight you immensely. I know the camera pixel count will be a major hurdle to many, but frankly, many of us do not need that many pixels since our images are mainly used for online sharing. A high-pixel image will end up resized before you upload to social websites. Worse, if you do not resize, it will take a long time and data bandwidth to upload the full-resolution images. HTC is taking a gamble here, but I'm for it. I am one who would rather sacrifice pixel count for a more efficient image-capturing and image-sharing solution. Putting that in perspective, the HTC One is the smartphone of choice for social sharing lovers, while image-critics should stick to their megapixel pursuit.

(edit 23 Apr 2013 1.45pm: the on-cue lyrics is provided by LyricFind while GraceNote provides the album art.)

What drives activity on Pinterest?

Apr. 23, 2013 ? Researchers at Georgia Tech and the University of Minnesota have released a new study that uses statistical data to help understand the motivations behind Pinterest activity, the roles gender plays among users and the factors that distinguish Pinterest from other popular social networking sites.

Led by Assistant Professor Eric Gilbert of Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing, working in collaboration with Professor Loren Terveen from the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering, the study reveals findings that could have implications for both academia and industry:

1. Female users have more re-pins, regardless of geographical location

2. Men typically have more followers on Pinterest than women

3. Four verbs set Pinterest apart from Twitter: "use," "look," "want" and "need"

"Those four verbs uniquely describe Pinterest and are particularly interesting," said Gilbert, who runs the Comp.Social Lab at Georgia Tech. "Words encapsulate the intent of people, revealing the motivations behind their actions. You can use the word 'this' after all of these verbs, reflecting the 'things' at the core of Pinterest. Many press articles have focused on Pinterest's commercial potential, and here we see verbs illustrating that consumption truly lies at the heart of the site."

Pinterest, which reached 10 million users faster than any other social network, revolves around the metaphor of a pin board: users "pin" photos they find on the web and organize them into topical collections. Pinterest users can follow one another and also re-pin, like and comment on other pins. After examining more than 200,000 pins, Gilbert and his team were able to compile the first statistical overview of the site.

"We wanted to take a closer look at Pinterest because of its differences compared to other social media, including its focus on pictures and products and the large proportion of women users," said Terveen, a co-author of the study. "These findings are an important early snapshot of Pinterest that help us begin to understand people's activity on this site."

Understanding the motivations behind activity on Pinterest is key, not only for researchers but also for business wishing to utilize the site for marketing purposes. A recent market survey showed that a higher proportion of Pinterest users click through to e-commerce sites -- and when they go there, they spend significantly more money than people who come from sites like Facebook or Twitter.

"There are several social networking sites that marketers and advertisers can take advantage of these days," said Gilbert. "After conducting this research, if I had to choose where to put my money and marketing, Pinterest would probably be my first choice."

HTC can?t catch a break, now faces European injunction for HTC One

MONTE CARLO, April 21 (Reuters) - The French Open should consider protecting Rafael Nadal with a higher seeding to avoid a potential quarter-final clash with Novak Djokovic, according to Roland Garros committee member Guy Forget. Nadal, the defending French Open champion, has slipped to fifth in the world rankings after missing seven months of competition with a knee injury, and could be drawn in the same section as world number one Djokovic at next month's claycourt grand slam. ...

George bails out Pacers in 107-90 win over Hawks

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Paul George offered to do anything it took to win in the playoffs.

He lived up to his word.

The All-Star forward scored a career playoff high 23 points Sunday, finished with 11 rebounds and 12 assists, played good defense and, yes, led the rejuvenated Pacers to a 107-90 victory over Atlanta and their first 1-0 lead in the playoffs since 2006.

"I just tell myself, 'keep attacking,'" George said. "The last week I've just really have been trying to take care of my body, getting massages, cold tub, eating healthy."

George, who had been trying to recover from an abdominal strain, and his teammates certainly had time to get healthy after coach Frank Vogel gave four of the starters three days off following last Sunday's loss at New York. None of the four ? George, Roy Hibbert, George Hill and David West ? logged a minute in Wednesday's regular-season finale, either.

The extra rest was just what George and his teammates needed.

They came into the playoffs with five losses in six games and trailed by at least 20 points in all six of those games. On Sunday, they trailed for exactly 5 minutes, 33 seconds, taking the lead for good when Hill knocked down one of his three 3-pointers.

George took care of the rest.

Despite going 3 of 13 from the field, the All-Star forward made his first 17 free throws ? tying Reggie Miller's single-game playoff record for best percentage. George then missed his 18th and final free throw with 2:35 to play, falling just short of Miller's mark.

He did, however, achieve another milestone ? joining Mark Jackson as the only players in franchise history to record a triple double in postseason play. Jackson achieved his feat May 13, 1998, against New York.

The only complaint in the Pacers' locker room was that he did too much work.

"I had to ask him just to ease up after he got the triple-double and let me get some rebounds," Hibbert joked. "But I'm happy for him. I believe in him."

The Pacers will definitely need more productivity out of George if they're going to advance to a second-round matchup against either New York or Boston.

But if Sunday's game is any indication, the Pacers appear to be back after their late-season struggles.

They had a balanced offensive attack with six players scoring in double figures. Hill, who sat out parts of practice Friday and Saturday with an injured left groin, made his first six shots and finished 7 of 10 from the field with three 3-pointers and 18 points. Hibbert still got 16 points and 11 rebounds, and backup Jeff Pendergraph scored 11 points, too.

That wasn't all.

The Pacers outrebounded Atlanta 48-32, limited the Hawks to 14 fast-break points and 90 overall. It was their best defensive performance in two weeks.

And for a change, the Pacers didn't even have to try and rally from a 20-point deficit.

It's only a start.

"All we did is protect our home court," Vogel said. "What do they say? The playoffs don't really start until the home team loses a game? We took Game 1 and we have to get Game 2."

The Hawks will have to play much better Wednesday if they intend to steal a game at Indy before heading home for Games 3 and 4.

Indy native Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 21 points and seven assists, while Josh Smith had 15 points and eight rebounds. The only other Atlanta player to reach double figures was Al Horford with 14 points.

The biggest complaints from the players were about free throws. Indiana was 30 of 34. Atlanta was 7 of 14.

Coach Larry Drew discounted those concerns and is now asking his team to focus on making the corrections.

"I thought we let some calls affect us early, we seemed like we complained the whole game. You can't do that at this level of play. You just can't do that," Drew said. "You've got to play through calls and we didn't do that. Whether we perceive it's a good whistle or a bad whistle, you have to play through it and we didn't do that."

Instead, the Pacers responded to the Hawks' early challenge with a 9-0 run that gave them a 19-13 lead. They extended it to 34-26 after one quarter and never trailed again, despite the Hawks' valiant attempts to come back. Atlanta cut the deficit to four late in the second quarter but still trailed 58-50 at the half, and cut a 15-point lead down to eight in the fourth.

That was the best Atlanta could do in Game 1.

"We have to run the offense with a little bit more pace and, just, everybody had to be ready and down on the defensive end. We have to help each other out," Hawks forward Josh Smith said after scoring 15 points. "We have to understand that there's going to be some defensive breakdowns and that we have to be there for each other. "

NOTES: The Hawks dropped to 0-3 this season at Indiana, but have won 11 straight in Atlanta over the Pacers. ... Hibbert played with the phrase "B Strong" written on his white shoe Sunday, a message to the people of Boston following the bombings at the marathon early last week. ... The Hawks returned to Atlanta after the game and will practice there Monday and Tuesday before returning to Indy on Wednesday.

Officials: At least 185 killed in Nigeria attack

(AP) ? Fighting between Nigeria's military and Islamic extremists killed at least 185 people in a fishing community in the nation's far northeast, officials said Sunday, an attack that saw insurgents fire rocket-propelled grenades and soldiers spray machine-gun fire into neighborhoods filled with civilians.

The fighting in Baga began Friday and lasted for hours, sending people fleeing into the arid scrublands surrounding the community on Lake Chad. By Sunday, when government officials finally felt safe enough to see the destruction, homes, businesses and vehicles were burned throughout the area.

The assault marks a significant escalation in the long-running insurgency Nigeria faces in its predominantly Muslim north, with Boko Haram extremists mounting a coordinated assault on soldiers using military-grade weaponry. The killings also mark one of the deadliest incidents ever involving Boko Haram.

Authorities had found and buried at least 185 bodies as of Sunday afternoon, said Lawan Kole, a local government official in Baga. He spoke haltingly to Borno state Gov. Kashim Shettima in the Kanuri language of Nigeria's northeast, surrounded by still-frightened villagers.

Officials could not offer a breakdown of civilian casualties versus those of soldiers and extremist fighters. Many of the bodies had been burned beyond recognition in fires that razed whole sections of the town, residents said. Those killed were buried as soon as possible, following local Muslim tradition.

Brig. Gen. Austin Edokpaye, also on the visit, did not dispute the casualty figures. Edokpaye said Boko Haram extremists used heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades in the assault, which began after soldiers surrounded a mosque they believed housed members of the radical Islamic extremist network Boko Haram. Extremists earlier had killed a military officer, the general said.

Edokpaye said extremists used civilians as human shields during the fighting ? implying that soldiers opened fire in neighborhoods where they knew civilians lived.

"When we reinforced and returned to the scene the terrorists came out with heavy firepower, including (rocket-propelled grenades), which usually has a conflagration effect," the general said.

However, local residents who spoke to an Associated Press journalist who accompanied the state officials said soldiers purposefully set the fires during the attack. Violence by security forces in the northeast targeting civilians has been widely documented by journalists and human rights activists. A similar raid in Maiduguri, Borno state's capital, in October after extremists killed a military officer saw soldiers kill at least 30 civilians and set fires across a neighborhood.

Sunday afternoon, the burned bodies of cattle and goats still filled the streets in Baga. Bullet holes marred burned buildings. Fearful residents of the town had begun packing to leave with their remaining family members before nightfall, despite Shettima trying to convince some to stay.

"Everyone has been in the bush since Friday night; we started returning back to town because the governor came to town today," grocer Bashir Isa said. "To get food to eat in the town now is a problem because even the markets are burnt. We are still picking corpses of women and children in the bush and creeks."

The Islamic insurgency in Nigeria grew out of a 2009 riot led by Boko Haram members in Maiduguri that ended in a military and police crackdown that killed some 700 people. The group's leader died in police custody in an apparent execution. From 2010 on, Islamic extremists have engaged in hit-and-run shootings and suicide bombings, attacks that have killed at least 1,548 people before Friday's attack, according to an AP count.

In January 2012, Boko Haram launched a coordinated attack in Kano, northern Nigeria's largest city, that killed at least 185 people as well. However, casualty numbers remain murky in Nigeria, where security and government officials often downplay figures.

Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has said it wants its imprisoned members freed and Nigeria to adopt strict Shariah law across the multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. While the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has started a committee to look at the idea of offering an amnesty deal to extremist fighters, Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau has dismissed the idea out of hand in messages.

The Boko Haram network, which analysts and diplomats say has loose links to two other al-Qaida-aligned groups in Africa, has splintered into other groups as well. Its command-and-control structure also remains unclear. Recent Internet videos featuring Shekau have shown him with fighters carrying military weapons he said were stolen during attacks on Nigeria's military. Those weapons have included rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy weapons.

Fighters suspected to belong to Boko Haram also have been seen in northern Mali, where heavily armed Islamic extremists took power in the weeks following a military coup in that West African nation. Analysts also have worried that Boko Haram may get its hands on weapons smuggled out of Libya following its recent civil war.

Despite the deployment of more soldiers and police to northern Nigeria, the nation's weak central government has been unable to stop the killings. Meanwhile, violent atrocities committed by security forces against the local civilian population only fuels rage in the region.

Scientists map all possible drug-like chemical compounds: Library of millions of small, carbon-based molecules chemists might synthesize

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Drug developers may have a new tool to search for more effective medications and new materials.

It's a computer algorithm that can model and catalogue the entire set of lightweight, carbon-containing molecules that chemists could feasibly create in a lab.

The small-molecule universe has more than 10^60 (that's 1 with 60 zeroes after it) chemical structures. Duke chemist David Beratan said that many of the world's problems have molecular solutions in this chemical space, whether it???s a cure for disease or a new material to capture sunlight.

But, he said, "The small-molecule universe is astronomical in size. When we search it for new molecular solutions, we are lost. We don't know which way to look."

To give synthetic chemists better directions in their molecular search, Beratan and his colleagues -- Duke chemist Weitao Yang, postdoctoral associates Aaron Virshup and Julia Contreras-Garcia, and University of Pittsburgh chemist Peter Wipf -- designed a new computer algorithm to map the small-molecule universe.

The map, developed with a National Institutes of Health P50 Center grant, tells scientists where the unexplored regions of the chemical space are and how to build structures to get there. A paper describing the algorithm and map appeared online in April in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The map helps chemists because they do not yet have the tools, time or money to synthesize all 10^60 compounds in the small-molecule universe. Synthetic chemists can only make a few hundred or a few thousand molecules at a time, so they have to carefully choose which compounds to build, Beratan said.

The scientists already have a digital library describing about a billion molecules found in the small-molecule universe, and they have synthesized about 100 million compounds over the course of human history, Beratan said. But these molecules are similar in structure and come from the same regions of the small-molecule universe.

It's the unexplored regions that could hold molecular solutions to some of the world's most vexing challenges, Beratan said.

To add diversity and explore new regions to the chemical space, Aaron Virshup developed a computer algorithm that built a virtual library of 9 million molecules with compounds representing every region of the small-molecule universe.

"The idea was to start with a simple molecule and make random changes, so you add a carbon, change a double bond to a single bond, add a nitrogen. By doing that over and over again, you can get to any molecule you can think of," Virshup said.

He programed the new algorithm to make small, random chemical changes to the structure of benzene and then to catalogue the new molecules it created based on where they fit into the map of the small-molecule universe. The challenge, Virshup said, came in identifying which new chemical compounds chemists could actually create in a lab.

Virshup sent his early drafts of the algorithm's newly constructed molecules to synthetic chemists who scribbled on them in red ink to show whether they were synthetically unstable or unrealistic. He then turned the criticisms into rules the algorithm had to follow so it would not make those types of compounds again.

"The rules kept us from getting lost in the chemical space," he said.

After ten iterations, the algorithm finally produced 9 million synthesizable molecules representing every region of the small-molecule universe, and it produced a map showing the regions of the chemical space where scientists have not yet synthesized any compounds.

"With the map, we can tell chemists, if you can synthesize a new molecule in this region of space, you have made a new type of compound," Virshup said. "It's an intellectual property issue. If you're in the blank spaces on our small molecule map, you're guaranteed to make something that isn't patented yet," he said.

The team has made the source code for the algorithm available online. The researchers said they hope scientists will use it to immediately start mining the unexplored regions of the small molecule universe for new chemical compounds.

The research was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (P50-GM067082).
