Edison and Ford cartoons now on display

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Thomas Edison and Henry Ford were not only powerful and influential men of the 20th century, they were also stars of editorial cartoons for decades.? You can see some of that work on display now at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers.

A new exhibit makes its debut Thursday, September 6, and will remain on display throught February 2013.? "Edison & Ford Editorial Cartoons:? Then and Now" features work of famous illustrators, Joseph Keppler, J.N. "Ding" Darling, and local cartoonist Doug MacGregor.? The latter created editorial cartoons for the News-Press for decades, often featuring Edison and Ford as characters in his cartoons.

The exhibit shows the influence the two icons had on society in their day and even now.? Because of their popularity in the 20th century, Edison and Ford were popular characters for editorial cartoonists for many decades.

The exhibit opens for a free viewing Thursday, September 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.? At 5:30 chief curator, Alison Giesen and MacGregor will be on hand to lead a gallery tour and and offer insight to the history of Edison and Ford as it relates to editorial cartoons.

Following the opening, the gallery will be open as part of the regular admission to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.? To learn more about the gallery and the estates, go to edisonfordwinterestates.org.
