Google+ has 250 million users, more mobile than desktop

Google+ has 250 million users

Google wasn't going to leave its budding social layer (don't call it a network) out of today's IO fun. It gave itself a bit of a pat on the back for (probably) exceeding people's expectations. For all the jokes that have been made (some of them on this very site) at Google+'s expense, it's racked up more than 250 million users. Sure, only 150 milllion actually active, but simply getting people signed up is a victory in itself. And, hey, about 50 percent of them sign on every day. More interestingly, Vic Gundotra says that more users are signing in with the mobile app than visiting the desktop site. That's great news to go along with the dedicated tablet version that was also announced.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Worldwide mobility increases -- for women more than for men

This release is available in German.

For the first time comparable migration data is available for almost every country of the world. To date, records were incompatible between nations and especially by gender and age, nonexistent. Emilio Zagheni from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany, for the first time provides a rich migration database by compiling the global flow of millions of e-mails.

"Where estimates of demographic flows exist, they are often outdated and largely inconsistent," says MPIDR researcher Emilio Zagheni. Official records are difficult to use for various reasons. Emigrants tend not to register after they move to a new country or do so very late. There is also no clear agreement between nations on how to actually define a migrant.

Official migration data is outdated and inconsistent

"Global internet data does not have these drawbacks," says Zagheni. "You are where you email." Together with Ingmar Weber from Yahoo! Research he traced emails sent from Yahoo! accounts around the world to infer the residence of its sender. Every device which sends email can be located at least at the country level by an internationally standardized code, the so-called IP address. Zagheni and Weber analysed the countries derived from IP addresses for a set of messages sent by 43 million anonymous Yahoo! account holders between September 2009 and June 2011.

In addition to the date and geographical origin of each message they compiled the self-reported birthday and gender of the sender. When a person started sending e-mail from a new location permanently, it was assumed that he or she had changed residence. This way they were able to calculate rates of migration from and to almost every country in the world. Only anonym zed data was used, so identifying individuals was impossible and no information about the recipients, the subject, or content of a message was accessed. The findings have now been published in the ACM Web Science Conference Proceedings.

The results not only are a proof of concept. They also reveal international migration characteristics never seen before. For the USA, Zagheni and Weber were able to produce the first curve of emigration by age and sex ever. "In the U.S. many statistics are collected about people who move into the country, but there is no system that keeps track of people who move out," says Emilio Zagheni.

The potential of the email statistics goes far beyond calculating gross country profiles. For instance, the researchers also looked into Mexico-US cross-border mobility. The data reveals how strongly both countries are demographically integrated: most people who moved from Mexico to the United States either spent time in the USA before emigrating north, or went back to visit Mexico soon after moving to the United States. Those in their 30s have the highest rate of mobility across the Mexico-US border, while the least mobile are those 50 and older.

Only the tip of the iceberg

The strength of Zagheni's and Weber's migration data comes not only from the vast number of emails available, but also from a mathematical model they set up to adjust for typical shortcomings of email statistics: those who send email are not representative of the entire population. Some groups, like the elderly, use email less or not at all and are thus underrepresented. But the researchers managed to calculate adjustment factors for such groups by gauging their email data against migration numbers from European countries, where official data is fairly reliable.

"What we addressed so far is only the tip of the iceberg," says Emilio Zagheni. With further fine-tuning of the adjustment factors and mining more digital data like twitter messages, more difficult questions could be tackled. For instance one could keep track of the short and long-term mobility patterns before and after a crisis like that of the Japanese Fukushima reactors. Unquestionably, digital records give demographers the chance to gain a more accurate picture of population dynamics in regions they can so far only guess about, says Zagheni. "This research has the most potential in developing countries, where the Internet spreads much faster than registration programs develop."

Google Now puts your search data to work

Google Now

One of the cooler things we're to see with Jelly Bean is Google Now. It's part search, part assistant, and part amazing. Imagine all the data that Google has aggregated about you (yes, that scary Google data that's shared across Google products with the new privacy policy) used to help you throughout your day. Need to catch the bus? Google Now will tell you when the next one is due and how long your ride will be when you get to the bus stop. Or sports scores for your favorite team, which you don't have to specify because Google already knows from your search data. Or traffic and rerouting based on destinations you've searched for.

Yes, it sounds pretty cool, and a little scary that it's able to use your data like it does. We're going to have to take a good look at it before we decide just how much we like it. And we will, a Jelly Bean rolls out.

Don't miss any of out Google I/O coverage!

O Music Awards Are Live Now!

Follow the Flaming Lips' record-breaking quest and all the awards via the 24-hour live stream.
By Kara Warner

And they're off! This year's O Music Awards have officially begun with a very ambitious and action-packed 24-hour live stream.

The digitally driven event that celebrates and honors artists, fans and innovators impacting digital-music culture will aim to help rockers the Flaming Lips break the Guinness World Record for the most concerts performed in multiple cities in a 24-hour time period.

This extra-special and possible record-breaking event will unfold via a historic bus ride through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. The Lips have just boarded their tricked-out bus, aptly named Endeavor, in Memphis and will be zigzagging across the region in attempt to break Jay-Z's Guinness World Record title for Most Live Concerts In 24 Hours (Multiple Cities) by hitting a total of eight cities to end in New Orleans.

The band will travel to each new location just as the opening band is finishing its set, where they'll perform a mini-set before moving on to the next location. The Lips will be joined by "Jackass" and "Wildboyz" star Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, Neon Trees, Karmin and a slew of additional artists.

Fans at home can watch the entire journey from any screen and, naturally, interact, influence and play a part in the voyage as the band heads toward the final destination. The O Music Awards will be broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT and live-stream at OMusicAwards.com.

The O Music Awards ceremony will give out 24 awards, one for each hour of the festival. Categories that artists are vying to win include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award.

Tim Lincecum beats Dodgers to end long drought

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Tim Lincecum threw his 167-pound body in front of the plate to save a run. He pounded the strike zone like the Lincecum of old. More than anything, he pitched the San Francisco Giants into first place while winning again at last.

The Freak's funk is over ? for now anyway.

Lincecum won for the first time in nearly two months to end the worst drought of his career, and the Giants held the Dodgers scoreless for the third straight game in a 3-0 win Wednesday.

Back in the clubhouse once his day was done, he joked with strength and conditioning coach Carl Kochan.

"I was like, 'Winning,' and he goes, 'It's a lot better than losing,'" Lincecum said. "That's the easiest way to put it. ... To be able to sweep the Dodgers, throw three shutouts and be in the position we're in says a lot about us."

Angel Pagan added an RBI single and drew a bases-loaded walk to back Lincecum (3-8) as the Giants moved into a tie with Los Angeles for first place in the NL West by getting just their second sweep of the season. It was the first time in franchise history they shut out the Dodgers in a three-game series, a run spanning 123 seasons.

Lincecum struck out eight and walked two while outpitching Chad Billingsley (4-7). The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner ended a career-long 10-start winless stretch in which he went a career-worst 0-6.

His victory came one day shy of two months after his last win, April 28 against San Diego.

Lincecum got focused, and he just plain got mad about his poor pitching. This outstanding outing helped the Giants take a division lead for the first time since last Aug. 9.

Facing a depleted Dodgers lineup didn't hurt. Already missing All-Star Matt Kemp, the Dodgers lost Andre Ethier after one at-bat to a left oblique injury that could land him on the disabled list.

"But getting shut out three days in a row hurts a lot more than this," said Ethier, scheduled for an MRI on Thursday.

Lincecum struck out two in a 1-2-3 second, and calmly punched his pitching hand into his glove as he walked off the mound. He had gone 0-4 in his previous six starts against the Dodgers since his last victory on July 30, 2010.

The Dodgers were swept in the Bay Area for the second time in as many weeks after losing three straight at Oakland from June 19-21, scoring two total runs over the six games here.

"It's been a long nine days," catcher A.J. Ellis said.

Melky Cabrera had an RBI double and Brandon Crawford tripled among his three hits in San Francisco's first three-game sweep of the Dodgers at AT&T Park since July 30-Aug. 1, 2010.

Pitching to cheers of "Come on, Timmy!" Lincecum also made a run-saving play that drew a standing ovation in the third.

After Billingsley doubled off the wall in center for his sixth hit in 25 at-bats this season, he moved to third on a wild pitch. Lincecum threw another wild pitch that got past catcher Hector Sanchez and reached the backstop. The pitcher covered home, blocked the plate and tagged out Billingsley. His glove was knocked loose, but Lincecum held onto it and made the play with his left hand.

"It's funny how the ugly thing kind of worked out to a pretty cool thing," Lincecum said. "I didn't want him to get a run. I'm not much to go through but he was going to have to go through me to get to the plate."

Lincecum allowed only one more runner past first. Sergio Romo recorded the final four outs for his fourth save in as many tries.

Lincecum came to the plate to roars from the sellout crowd of 42,245 in the third and hit a one-out single down the left-field line. He scored on Cabrera's double.

Buster Posey then walked to load the bases and Pagan walked to force home a run, which brought pitching coach Rick Honeycutt to the mound for a visit with Billingsley.

Billingsley lost his third straight start, tagged for three runs and nine hits in six innings.

Lincecum, who settled down Friday at Oakland after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning and showed positive signs the next four, ran his scoreless innings streak to 12.

Manager Bruce Bochy visited Lincecum after a seventh-inning walk to Ellis put runners on first and second with one out, but drew cheers when Lincecum stayed in the game to retire the next two batters.

After Lincecum told Bochy "Yeah" he was fine to stay in the game, he followed that up with a stronger "Yes, sir." It worked.

"I think he has returned to the Timmy of before," said Sanchez, catching Lincecum for the second straight start.

Sanchez stayed in the game after landing hard on his left arm, hip and ribs while making a diving catch of a foul popup by Herrera for the first out in the fourth.

Ethier was removed before the bottom of the first after injuring his side muscle on a check swing.

Notes: Giants starting pitchers have allowed one earned run in their last 31 innings. ... Juan Uribe, 1-for-21 during the road trip, returned to the Los Angeles lineup and went 0-for-3. ... Dodgers 2B Mark Ellis will head on a rehab assignment Saturday to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga if his baserunning goes well Thursday. He's likely to play four or five games and get 20 at-bats. "I'm anxious," Ellis said. "I don't think I've ever gotten a hit in a rehab game. You just want to get back with the team." ... Wednesday marked the 32nd anniversary of Jerry Reuss' no-hitter for the Dodgers against the Giants at Candlestick Park. ... LHP Madison Bumgarner looks to become the Giants' first 10-game winner of 2012 when he pitches the series opener Thursday night against Cincinnati and former San Francisco skipper Dusty Baker

8 Ways to Avoid Relationship Disasters on Facebook | 93.1 WZAK

By Dawn Papandrea

Here?s a stat to dislike: Nearly one-third of divorce filings in 2011 mentioned the word Facebook, according to a survey from Divorce-Online, a British legal service. ?You can?t blame Facebook for divorce, but it will exploit cracks that are already there,? says Charles J. Orlando, relationship expert and author of The Problem with Women? is Men. So does using Facebook doom your marriage? Hardly. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg?s status recently went from single to married. Before your marital status takes a turn toward ?It?s complicated,? try these expert strategies to protect your relationship. Photo credit: Thinkstock

1. Go beyond just being friends with your spouse.

Befriending your spouse and sharing your relationship status on Facebook are no-brainers, but go one step further, suggests Julie Spira, author of The Rules of Netiquette: How to Mind Your Manners on the Web . ?Both you and your spouse should be digitally proud of your marriage. So post your anniversary dinner photo together or a picture from a recent vacation,? she says. Orlando agrees, adding that not mentioning your husband is the online equivalent of not wearing your wedding band.

2. Consider sharing passwords.

Elizabeth Hanes of Albuquerque, NM, says she and her husband, Lee, know each other?s logins to everything, but not so they can snoop on each other. ?It shows that neither of us have anything to hide,? she says. It?s also practical. ?Once, a friend posted something inappropriate to Lee?s wall, but he couldn?t access Facebook from work so he asked me to delete the post for him,? she says.

That?s not to say that exchanging passwords is a must. ?Everyone needs personal space, both online and offline,? says Spira. ?While you might share a toothbrush, a little privacy and mystery is good for a marriage.? So even if you know each other?s logins, you should feel like you never have to use it.

3. Don?t be friends with exes.

People rarely have pure intentions when they seek out exes, says Orlando. His simple advice: ?Defriend, disassociate, disengage.? That?s because the protection of the Internet allows for more forward conversation, points out Karen Sherman, PhD, relationship specialist and author of Marriage Magic! Find It, Keep It and Make It Last.
?

Seeing what an old friend is up to, though, is part of the fun of Facebook, she adds. But-and here?s the important part-only if your partner is okay with it. If you know your spouse would be upset to see an old flame on your friends list, ignoring or rejecting a friend request is the right move. On the flipside, if you?re uncomfortable that your husband is friends with an ex, bring up the subject. ?Let him explain why they?re friends,? recommends Spira. ?Chances are, it?s not a big deal to him to add her to his many friends from the past.?

4. Avoid airing your dirty laundry.

Too many couples overshare their spats on Facebook, says Spira, ?and your friends don?t want to see the drama in your marriage.? Remember, posting about how your hubby annoyed you is like putting it on a neighborhood billboard.

Even when your intentions are innocent, posting about your partner can hurt feelings, as *Barbara of St. Paul, MN, found out. Her husband dropped off their son late to a birthday party. The birthday boy?s mom made a passive aggressive remark on Facebook about people not arriving on time, and Barbara apologized for her husband who slipped up on ?daddy duty.? ?*Steve didn?t like that he was made to look irresponsible when he was late because the place was hard to find,? she explains. ?Now I only post positive stuff about my husband,? she says.

5. Set rules together.

Your page may be your own, but you have to respect your mate, says Dr. Sherman. ?Be aware of one another?s sensitivities,? she advises. For instance, maybe you?re not thrilled that your husband is posting vacation photos of you in your bikini. Or he doesn?t like when you tag him in posts that share a strong political view. Discuss posting no-nos to avoid future conflicts.

Sales Leads: How to Create a Lead Management Process

Last updated 8 hours 16 minutes ago

An important part of any marketing strategy is creating a process to track and monitor new sales leads, which are people who show interest in your products and services. By setting up a basic lead management process for the leads you capture through your marketing efforts, you can keep track of where your leads are coming from and accurately measure the effectiveness of your marketing. Here are a simple few tips to get started with lead management for your business.

Track the Source of Your Leads

A vital part of the process of handling your sales leads is to make sure that you track where those leads are coming from. This task will help the overall effectiveness of your online and offline advertising efforts because you?ll have a clear understanding of which marketing tactics are driving the most customers to your business. One simple way to do this is to simply ask prospects how they heard about your business once they contact you. Additionally, you can use analytics software on your website to monitor the sources of online leads. Another option for tracking leads is to use a call tracking number or tracking URL that you can place on your offline or online advertising, so when people contact you via those methods, you can track which marketing brought them to your business. Then, you can use this insight to shift your marketing investment toward the types of efforts that bring you the most customers.

Monitor & Respond to Social Media Channels

Social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Plus have become great new sources of potential leads for your business. It?s important to monitor social media regularly and follow up with consumers who are leaving comments on your page, tweeting you publicly, or sending you direct messages. If someone expresses interest in your product or service or contacts you directly via social media, ask them to contact you via email or phone so you can get more information about what they?re interested in, and collect their contact information so you can follow up. In addition, you can use social media pages as a source of information about your target market, like their demographics, interests, and expectations from your business. ?

Set Up Notifications of New Leads

To take your lead management strategy to the next level, you can invest in a service that provides real-time lead notifications, such as an email or SMS message, when you receive a new lead. New leads could be generated from a ?a form submission, email, voicemail, or chat lead. Notifications let you know as soon as a lead comes in, provide a record of the lead, and ensure you can respond promptly to close the sale.?In fact, after the first hour, the chances of reaching a lead are reduced by 10 times.?

Record Your Calls

Recording calls to your business is an easy way to track and store incoming sales leads. Many?call recording technologies?not only let you record the live call itself, but also capture data such as caller ID, date, and time, so you have a full picture of the call and caller. Plus, the ability to record calls can also provide additional business insight, such as whether or not your team is effectively answering the phone, ?trends about what customers are calling about, and issues or feedback about your products or services, so you can make adjustments where needed.

Organize Your Database

Whether you?re entering leads into a CRM system or managing them in your own spreadsheet, it?s important to?keep your lead data clean?and organized. First, determine what data you want to capture, like name, email, phone, and lead source, so that you?re always recording the same type of information for each lead. In addition, you should regularly check your list and remove duplicate leads, make sure contact information is complete and up-to-date, and keep track of all interactions with the prospect so that you can pace out how often you want to reach out again ?to existing customers and active leads you?ve already contacted.?

Once you have a solid process in place for managing new sales leads, it?s important to tie any sales you make back to the original lead to accurately measure the ultimate ROI of your marketing investment. By documenting this process, you?ll have a better idea of which marketing investments have the biggest impact on your business.?

What lead management strategies has your business implemented, and which do you plan on adding? Let us know in a comment!

Documentary chronicling 'royal' real estate mess to get July release ...

'The Queen of Versailles' ? the real-life saga of a beleaguered billionaire, his spendthrift trophy wife and their unfinished 90,000-square-foot dream home in Florida ??is set for a nationwide release on July 20.

?

Just the other week, the film's official trailer was released to much anticipation. The film itself will hit theaters in mid-July.

?

As the story goes, Siegel's 90,000-square-foot, Versailles-inspired home ??Alyssa Rosenberg of ThinkProgress calls it both a ?monument to bad taste? and a ?testament to waste? ??was never fully completed due to the economic downturn, and put on the market. And, yes, the two-thirds completed property still appears to be available for $100 million (?finished based on the royal palace of King Louis XIV of the 17th?century or to the buyers specifications?) or for $75 million ?as is with all exterior finishings in crates in the 20-car garage on site.?) However, the Wall Street Journal noted in March that there has been serious price-cutting as of late with the asking prices being lowered to $90 million and $65 million. Siegel has claimed that construction on the home has in fact resumed while, in the meantime, his family lives in a nearby 26,000-square-foot home.

?

The documentary chronicles how Siegel and his much younger wife ? a buxom former beauty queen/mother of eight/compulsive shopper named Jackie ??attempt to carry on when the housing bubble bursts, Siegel's latest resort property in Vegas runs into trouble, and construction on their monstrous mega-mansion subsequently screeches to a halt.

When I posted about "The Queen of Versailles" back in January, an outraged reader wondered why such a story would appear on?MNN, claiming that they wish they had never read the ?stupid?article.??So why would I write about a documentary film concerning a private residence with a 6,000-square-foot master bedroom, 10 kitchens, three swimming pools, and an indoor roller skating rink when I normally post about homes that are of limited square footage and boast environmentally sustainable features??

?

Well, because I think it's fascinating and, ultimately, the film isn't really about the house ? if you could even call it that. Sure, the film may appear to be a lurid, mean-spirited gawk-and-mock fest distantly related to a bunch of drunk, maladjusted society(ish) wives tearing into each other on cable television (BlackBook?and a few other publications make the inevitable "Real Housewives" comparison). However, Greenfield?states that underneath the histrionics, cleavage and endless layers of gaudy?d?cor, "The Queen of Versailles" is about something that we can all relate to but on a much different scale: ?[It?s] really similar to what many of us went through in the economic crisis: having to downsize, having to deal with the possibility of losing our homes, having to deal with significant changes in life and also the stress on relationships,? she said in a Sundance Channel interview.

?

Greenfield has discussed how she became friends with Jackie during the three-year filming period and that the couple, despite their penchant for vulgar displays of consumerism, are unpretentious. "One of the things that appealed to me about Jackie and David is that because they come from humble origins, they had a generosity of spirit that allowed me to get to know them," Greenfield recently told the?New York Times. Of course, much of the hoopla surrounding the film has to do with the fact that David is now suing Greenfield for defamation.

?

?What drew me to this subject was that I got interested in the idea of a house as the ultimate expression of the American Dream,? Greenfield also revealed to the?New York Times?in an article that the film is is less about a grotesquely oversized house threatened with foreclosure and more about ?the drip, drip, drip of a rich family trying to hold onto what it has ? and its painful, sometimes comical, adjustment to changing circumstances." In the case of Jackie Siegel, adjusting to changing circumstances involves taking a stretch limo to McDonald's. Like I said, this is something we can all relate to on a much different scale.

?

The "Queen of Versailles" opens to a limited release on July 6 and expands nationwide on July 20. Think you?ll watch it? Like David and Jackie Siegel, I've had to do some belt-tightening myself over the past couple of years and don't see movies in the theater that often, but I'm willing to part with $14 to check this one out.

(AP) ? The president of the country's best-known Christian ministry dedicated to helping people repress same-sex attraction through prayer is trying to distance the group from the idea that gay people's sexual orientation can be permanently changed or "cured."

That's a significant shift for Exodus International, the 36-year-old Orlando-based group that boasts 260 member ministries around the U.S. and world. For decades, it has offered to help conflicted Christians rid themselves of unwanted homosexual inclinations through counseling and prayer, infuriating gay rights activists in the process.

This week, 600 Exodus ministers and followers are gathering for the group's annual conference, held this year in a Minneapolis suburb. The group's president, Alan Chambers, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the conference would highlight his efforts to dissociate the group from the controversial practice usually called ex-gay, reparative or conversion therapy.

"I do not believe that cure is a word that is applicable to really any struggle, homosexuality included," said Chambers, who is married to a woman and has children, but speaks openly about his own sexual attraction to men. "For someone to put out a shingle and say, 'I can cure homosexuality' ? that to me is as bizarre as someone saying they can cure any other common temptation or struggle that anyone faces on Planet Earth."

Chambers has cleared books endorsing ex-gay therapy from the Exodus online bookstore in recent months. He said he's also worked to stop member ministries from espousing it.

Chambers said the ministry's emphasis should be simply helping Christians who want to reconcile their own particular religious beliefs with sexual feelings they consider an affront to scripture. For some that might mean celibacy; for others, like Chambers, it meant finding an understanding opposite-sex partner.

"I consider myself fortunate to be in the best marriage I know," Chambers said. "It's an amazing thing, yet I do have same-sex attractions. Those things don't overwhelm me or my marriage; they are something that informs me like any other struggle I might bring to the table."

Exodus has seen its influence wane in recent decades, as mainstream associations representing psychiatrists and psychologists have relegated reparative therapy to crackpot status. But Exodus and groups like it continue to influence many evangelicals and fundamentalists, and gay rights activists said the damage they inflict on individuals can be deep and lasting.

"We appreciate any step toward open, transparent honesty that will do less harm to people," said Wayne Besen, a Vermont-based activist who has worked to discredit ex-gay therapy. "But the underlying belief is still that homosexuals are sexually broken, that something underlying is broken and needs to be fixed. That's incredibly harmful, it scars people."

The cultural battle over ex-gay therapy drew national attention last year, after an activist with Besen's group, "Truth Wins Out," went undercover in a counseling clinic co-owned by U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, at the time a GOP presidential contender, and run by her husband, Marcus. The activist, John Becker, released footage seeming to show a counselor at the Minnesota clinic offering to help him overcome homosexual urges.

In earlier interviews, Marcus Bachmann had denied his practice seeks to "cure" gay people but said it was open to patients who wanted to talk about their homosexuality.

Besen said Truth Wins Out is unveiling a campaign this week to encourage lawmakers in all 50 states to ban reparative therapy from being performed on minors. The California state Senate passed a bill to do that last month, and Besen said similar legislation is likely to be introduced soon in at least three other states.

While Exodus has officially shied away from reparative therapy, the practice still has adherents.

"To hold out the idea that one's homosexual attractions can diminish, that the possibility of heterosexual attractions coming forth over a period of time ? those things are possible," said David Pruden, chief operating officer with the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a professional association made up of about 2,000 therapists and others who still espouse such treatments.

Chambers acknowledged some Exodus affiliates might still offer reparative therapy. But he said "99.9 percent" of people he's encountered in two decades with Exodus were not able to completely rid themselves of same-sex attraction. He believes the organization must be honest about that when people come looking for help.

"I guess I'd like to see some sort of apology from leaders of Exodus for all the people they misled," said Jeffry Ford, a St. Paul psychologist who worked for an Exodus-linked group in the 1970s and '80s before splitting with his wife, coming out and strongly disavowing his past work.

Ford and other gay activists have planned a Thursday news conference to criticize Exodus for holding its conference in Minnesota just months before a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.

"These kinds of conferences help put fears in the world about what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender," said Monica Meyer, executive director of OutFront Minnesota, the state's chief gay rights group. "For people who are questioning or LGBT, it sends them a message that there's something wrong with them."

Chambers said the timing is coincidental and Exodus isn't looking to influence Minnesota voters. While the group holds that any sexual activity outside a heterosexual marriage is sinful, he said he wants Exodus to disengage from politics.

"For those that don't hold to the same Biblical ethic that I do, I think there's room for further discussion without a culture war that has really served no one," Chambers said. "I think it's time for us in the church to move on from that fight."

AP reports: ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland - Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Northern Ireland on Tuesday to celebrate the British territory's hard-won peace in a town that suffered one of the IRA's worst massacres - and inspired its greatest moment of Christian forgiveness.

Catholic and Protestant leaders from across Ireland united in Enniskillen at an ecumenical service in the monarch's honor as, outside in wind and rain, several thousand people waved Union Jack flags and banners honoring the queen amid an unrelenting din of pealing church bells.

The monarch's long-awaited meeting with former Irish Republican Army commander Martin McGuinness comes Wednesday in Belfast. Full story

How to not think that having no loans or debts will improve your ...

Tip #17: Don?t think that having no loans or debts will improve your credit score.

?

Some people believe that owing no money, having no credit cards, and in fact avoiding the whole world of credit will help improve their credit score.? The opposite is true ? lenders want to see that you can handle credit, and the only way they can tell is if you have credit that you handle responsibly.? Having no credit at all can actually be worse for your credit score than having a few credit accounts that you pay off scrupulously.? If you currently have no credit accounts at all, opening a low balance credit card can actually boost your credit score.

Upward Sports Basketball Camp Kicks Off

Story Published: Jun 22, 2012 at 8:12 PM MDT

Story Updated: Jun 22, 2012 at 9:43 PM MDT

BILLINGS - It's a hot summer day, but many Billings kids skipped the pool for a day on the court.

A local church is hosting a basketball camp on Billings South Side. 150 kids had some healthy competition Friday at the first upward basketball camp. The day was filled with basketball drills, games, contests and life lessons.
West High grad and pro basketball player Mandy Morales says the camp is a great way to give kids a positive summer experience and lessons for success. "I mean basketball really kept me going and everything so I just think this is a great opportunity for them." said Morales.

Ten year old Oran Nash is a camp participant and he plans to be an NBA basketball player, he says the camp has been very helpful towards meeting his goals and encourages participants to dream big! "Do what you're capable of, it doesn't matter if it's not sports...it can be on a video game, anything that you want, even if it's something that people think is girly. It's what you want. It's what you want to do, It's your future." said Nash.
Each participant received a basketball camp T-shirt, water bottle and an Upward Sports basketball. Organizers hope to raise funds to improve a basketball court in the South Side for a second camp in August.

Experimental drug improves muscle strength among male cancer patients

An experimental medication safely increases muscle strength and physical functioning among cancer patients with low testosterone levels, a new drug study finds. The results will be presented Sunday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

The medication, called enobosarm, is the first of a new class of drugs known as selective androgen receptor modulators, which are similar to steroids in their growth-enhancing effects but, potentially, have fewer side effects.

Muscle wasting is a significant problem for many cancer patients due to imbalances in body systems caused by the underlying cancer. In addition, this muscle wasting may be related to low testosterone levels, or hypogonadism, which affects approximately 50 percent of men undergoing treatment for late-stage cancer. Muscle wasting can seriously limit mobility, functioning, and quality of life for affected patients.

In this multi-center drug trial, enobosarm significantly improved physical function among patients with low testosterone, as well as normal hormone levels. Among the low testosterone group, physical function improved by 19 percent, while patients with normal hormone measurements increase their functional ability by 13 percent. At the study's start, 60 percent of patients had subnormal testosterone levels, lost more weight, and suffered greater declines in physical functioning than patients with normal hormone concentrations.

"These data provide evidence that enobosarm may play an important role in the management of cancer-related muscle-wasting even in the setting of low testosterone," said study lead author Adrian Dobs, M.D., M.H.S., professor of medicine and oncology, and vice-chair of the Department of Medicine, Faculty Development at Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore, MD.

The overall study included 159 cancer patients, of which 65 percent were men. Female participants were post-menopausal, and males were >45 years old. Participants had lost on average about 8 percent of their body weight in the six months preceding the study, and had a body mass index, which is a calculation of weight to height, of

This particular study examined a subset of this population, which comprised 93 male patients. Sixty percent of these men had low testosterone levels at the beginning of the trial. Investigators randomly assigned these participants to receive either 1 or 3 milligrams of oral enobosarm or placebo daily for 16 weeks. Since the trial was double-blinded, neither patients nor researchers knew which group was receiving the study drug versus placebo. At the study's beginning and end, investigators assessed patients' physical functioning using a stair-climbing test.

According to Dobs, this study laid the groundwork for ongoing research examining enobosarm's effects on muscle-wasting specifically among lung-cancer patients.

"Enobosarm has the potential to improve physical performance and increase muscle mass, potentially providing lung-cancer patients with improved strength, or physical function, more independence, increased quality of life, better response to chemotherapy and hopefully longer survival," Dobs said.

Previous findings from the larger study comprising male and female patients have been reported, but these data on the subset of male patients with baseline low testosterone are being presented for the first time.

The inspiration for easy-to-do scrapbooking layouts can differ. You possibly can get enough ideas from the home activities and gatherings. You may want to decide to feature your own little ones and young kids as theme. Family outings and getaways are actually creative suggestions to begin with. This means that, a person don?t have to be some sort of guru in order to think of a possible layout concept or design.

In some instances, the ideal layouts are the ones crafted from simplicity. In that way, the scrapbooker can assertain exactly what to do with every page, apparently because she gets her inspirations from the people around her. Get-togethers and experiences can also be good sources of inspirations just as well, you?ve just got to be receptive to anything and every aspect.

Here are a few easy layout tips to make use of:

Scrapbooking Layout Concepts with Regards to FamilyNeedless to say, family members will definitely be the best, if not ultimate sources of enjoyment, pride not to mention laughter. Your family is included in almost all of your life adventures as they simply define your own trials and contribute to your achievements. You shared your laughters and tears with your mom and dad and brothers and sisters. You shared your own merits and disappointments with your grandparents, if not your aunties and uncles. In any case, whether it?s a wonderful or a not so great memory, scrapbook layouts related to loved ones always work.

Scrapbooking Layout Ideas About ExcursionsTravel is undoubtedly an indulgence. At certain times, it may be a type of benefit or a lavish perk. Regardless of how and where you spent your leisure time, pictures and photographs are usually present. These types of pictures can be like your mementos aside from the customary mugs and key chains. Unlike the last thing mentioned, you are not surely throwing away precious resources as you are pondering over reliving a treasure through the use of aged pictures. You?re going to be equally preserving the memories and saving yourself lots of excessive baggage. That being said, any time you simply had taken a vacation in Hawaii islands or took pleasure in Brazillian carnival in South america, scrapbooking is undoubtedly a worthwhile pastime.

Scrapbooking Layout Ideas Pertaining to Household PetsPets are generally cared for as family members. For their keepers, a pet dog or cat provides company. In many ways, house animals and their masters benefit each other in a quite a few ways and a lot more often than not, pet lovers are usually fond of taking photos and dressing their household pets. So, you may want to seize this opportunity and make your photograph opportunities as potential layout pages. Why don?t you center your own theme on your beloved dogs or pets? Go have some pictures and keep track of anything in the form of a cute layout page. And, in case you have already created a scrapbook layout for friends and family, this feature demonstrates a different dimension of your personality.

Scrapbooking Layout Ideas Concerning FriendshipsRelationships are not only limited to love affairs or unions. Relationships could be filial and friendly. Understanding the relationship direction by using a particular perception, gives you many ideas for your scrapbooking pages. In addition to that, this is also the best time to make your best friend a good send-off present. As a grown-up, perhaps you are now fond of remembering your childhood antics and not so good ways. At certain times, recalling your first family vacation or snapshots of your university dormitory recaptures back worthwhile memories. By making use of these inspirations can fuel your wish to make a scrapbook page and somehow, this might be your single possible opportunity to go over the top with your favorite embellishments. Now, that is one girly page and concept in the works.
