?My Lunches With Orson: Conversations Between Henry Jaglom and Orson Welles? (Metropolitan Books), by Peter Biskind

Orson Welles would enter the trendy Los Angeles restaurant Ma Maison through the kitchen, thus avoiding being seen arriving by wheelchair. His girth as wide as his talent, the director of 1941?s ?Citizen Kane? sat in a mammoth restaurant chair with his toy poodle, Kiki. Eager for almost any kind of work in the early 1980s, the one-time boy wonder behind the film regularly declared the greatest ever made had become a living symbol of how Hollywood could abandon its geniuses.

For years, the writer and director Henry Jaglom joined Welles at Ma Maison nearly every week. He was Welles? unofficial agent and representative, trying to get his friend?s movie projects off the ground. Over lunch, they discussed practically anything ? Welles? weight was out of bounds ? and Welles offered seemingly unguarded observations, at times humorous and profane, in spite of the presence of a tape recorder.

On actors: ?English actors are more modest than Americans, because they?ve never had (?method? acting teacher) Lee Strasberg to teach ?em that they know better than the director.?

On gossip columnists Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper: ?You don?t know the power those two cows had in this town! People opened the paper, ignoring Hitler and everything else, and turned right to Louella and Hedda.?

On the Irish: ?They hate themselves. I lived for years in Ireland. The majority of intelligent Irishmen dislike Irishmen, and they?re right.?

Decades after Welles? death in 1985, author Peter Biskind presents the transcripts from those recorded lunches. Welles appears uncensored ? and it?s not a pretty sight. Fascinating, amusing and eye-opening, to be sure, but ?My Lunches With Orson? is yet more evidence that one of the wonderful minds of theater and film was in a creative death spiral in his final years. Not that Welles didn?t have ideas, but he couldn?t find backers for them ? and that was a dark weight on his mind.

Lightening up their chats are his tart appraisals of stars like Laurence Olivier (?seriously stupid?), Norma Shearer (?one of the most minimally talented ladies ever to appear on the silver screen?), Humphrey Bogart (?both a coward and a very bad fighter?), Spencer Tracy (?I hate him so ? he?s one of those bitchy Irishmen?) and Joan Fontaine (?just a plain old bad actor ? she?s got four readings, and two expressions, and that?s it?).

He has praise for many others, including Clark Gable (not bright but ?terribly nice?) and Carole Lombard (?I adored her?). Although he appeared memorably in movies such as ?The Third Man? and ?Touch of Evil,? Welles considers his own acting an amateur pursuit.

Welles? taste in movies can be surprising. Among his many dislikes are the American films of Alfred Hitchcock, whom he considered burdened by egotism and laziness. Of ?Rear Window,? one of Hitchcock?s most popular films, he says, ?Everything is stupid about it.? Worse, he adds, is ?Vertigo.? Fortunately for his sake, Welles did not live to see ?Vertigo? replace ?Citizen Kane? last year as the best film ever in the decennial Sight & Sound poll of film critics.

In a lean and lively essay, Biskind captures the essence of Welles and the conundrum posed by his artistic ups and downs. The star of this engaging book, as he was in nearly everything he did, remains Welles. Like Falstaff, a character he loved to play, he is witty and vain ? and, in the end, a tragic figure.

'King of the Hill' voice actor dies at 67

Dennis Burkley with Will Smith in an episode of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Actor Dennis Burkley, who voiced the middle-school principal on "King of the Hill" and played Fred Sanford's partner on a sequel to "Sanford and Son," has died at age 67.

Burkley died in his sleep Sunday in Sherman Oaks, Calif., his agent told The Hollywood Reporter.

His son Shawn told the magazine, "He was a great father as well as a great actor. He stayed with my mom in Hollywood where marriages don?t last very long. He cared deeply about his family."

Burkley, who was born in Los Angeles but raised in Texas, played the recurring character of Carl Moss, a high-school friend of Hank Hill and principal of Tom Landry Middle School, on Fox's long-running animated show "King of the Hill." The show ran from 1997 to 2010.

Burkley got his acting break in 1976 thanks to his other job -- cleaning pools.

"As luck would have it, one of the pools I cleaned belonged to director Bob Rafelson," Burkley wrote on his website. "Bob cast me in my first film, 'Stay Hungry,' along with another unknown, Arnold Schwarzenegger."

He went on to numerous parts on television and in film, but Burkley said his big break came when a role on "Maude" brought him to the attention of famed producer Norman Lear, who cast him in a recurring role as truck driver Mac on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman."

One of his most memorable roles was that of Fred Sanford's junk-business partner in the two-season sitcom "Sanford," NBC's 1980 attempt to revive the 1970s hit. Burkley played Cal Pettie, whose character essentially replaced Sanford's son Lamont after actor Demond Wilson chose not to reprise his role from the original show. "Sanford" never caught on as its predecessor had and was canceled before completing a second season.

The heavyset actor played Dozer, a biker who never speaks, in the 1985 film "Mask,"

In addition to "Sanford," Burkley appeared on numerous television shows, including "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Emergency," "The Rockford Files," "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "My Name Is Earl." One character he played on "Hill Street Blues," criminal Sonny Crockett, became more famous when the show's creator re-used the name for Don Johnson's unrelated role on "Miami Vice."

He made his directorial debut with 2005's "Repetition," an independent film about acting students. It was named a best feature film winner in that year's Appalachian Film Festival. He also taught acting classes.

Burkley is survived by his wife Laura and two children.

Sudan President Bashir's trip to Nigeria sees outcry

')
//-->

Rights organizations are criticizing Sudan President Omar al-Bashir's inclusion in a Nigeria health summit given his alleged role in the genocide in Darfur, according to BBC News.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), of which Nigeria is a member, put out an arrest warrant for Bashir in March on charges of genocide and other atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region. However, the ICC relies on national governments to make the arrest in the court's name because it has no police, said Human Rights Watch.

Many countries have refused to receive Bashir, but "Nigeria has the shameful distinction of being the first West African country to welcome ICC fugitive Sudanese president," Elise Keppler of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch said on Monday, according to All Africa.

The Sudanese leader was even given a full guard of honor when he arrived in?Abuja for a health summit on HIV/AIDS organized by the African Union, said the BBC's Nigeria correspondent, Chris Ewokor.

Rights organizations want Bashir arrested, not given state honors. Bashir denies his involvement in the Darfur conflict that killed an estimated 200,000 people, according to Reuters.

Chino Obiagwu of the Nigerian Coalition for the International Criminal Court said Nigeria is breaking international law by receiving Bashir, and rights activists there vowed to take the matter to court on Monday, reported AllAfrica.

"It sends a very wrong signal to other African countries that the International Criminal Court could be ignored, Obiagwu told the BBC's Focus on Africa program, saying the move suggests "African nations don't need to co-operate with the ICC and if that impression continues, then we're going to have serious problems dealing with impunity in Africa."

Nigerian presidential spokesman Reuben Abati deferred critics to the?African Union's 2009 decision not to cooperate with ICC rulings, saying:?"The Sudanese president came for an A[frican] U[nion] event and the AU has taken a position on the ICC arrest order, so Nigeria has not taken action different from the AU stand," reported Reuters.

The ICC has been accused of an over-emphasis on crimes in Africa, a charge the organization denies.

Sleep Critically Affects Childhood Brain Development

2012-07-16-eh_logo.jpg
By Robert Rosenberg

In this month?s British Medical Journal, there's a report on a study demonstrating the relationship of sleep to brain development in kids. It is called the Millennium cohort Study, and it followed 11,000 children. Those children who demonstrated irregular bedtimes up to the age of three were the most negatively affected when it came to reading, math skills and spatial awareness. When followed over time, they continued to lag developmentally even by the age of seven -- and girls more than boys. The authors concluded that the first three years of life seem to be a particularly sensitive time for sleep and its relationship to brain development.

The findings are similar to a smaller Canadian study published in the journal Sleep in 2008. This study found that children sleeping less than ten hours a night before age three were more likely to exhibit language and reading problems as well as ADHD. In both studies, these problems persisted despite improvement in total sleep time after the age of three.

More from Everyday Health:
New Sunscreen Labels Limit Confusion

What we are seeing here is the relationship of sleep to neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity relates to structural and functional changes in the brain brought on by training and experience. It is the ability of the brain to change by increasing brain tissue called gray matter and to alter the brain circuits called synapses. We know that adults are capable of these changes but on a much smaller scale. It would appear that the most crucial period for these kinds of brain changes is probably during the first three years of life. In fact, that is one of the reasons that children can recover from head trauma much more completely than adults can. It also explains the fact that if the entire left hemisphere is removed in a three or four year old, that child can still develop normal language skills. This is not possible in an adult.

Why Your Child Needs Lots of Sleep
So how does sleep enter into this? We know that young children exhibit the largest amount of slow wave (deep) sleep. Recent studies have correlated this slow wave sleep with brain development. In fact, certain types of brain scans have demonstrated that regional areas of the brain receiving these slow waves show increased growth and development in response. REM sleep is also important and plays a major role in developing the visual related parts of our brain. Finally, recent works show the production during sleep of cerebral proteins required for these changes.

So what is the take home message of these studies? Probably that sleep is much more important in childhood brain development than we ever realized before. It is very important that your toddler get sufficient sleep -- and that, as the British study showed, you establish a regular bedtime to which your child adheres. His or her future may depend upon it.

Rising costs force mushroom farmer to cut 10 jobs

Topics:? agriculture, clarks mushrooms, farmer, farming, mushrooms

    Trevor Clark.
    Trevor Clark. Iain Curry

A LOCAL mushroom farmer has pulled out of the industry and cut 10 jobs, as a result of flat produce prices unable to counteract the ever-increasing cost of production.

Clark's Mushrooms, at Diddillibah, had grown from just two cold rooms to 32 over 15 years, and recently was producing four tonnes of mushrooms a week.

But increasing wages, increases in superannuation contributions, weekend penalty rates, and particularly a 22.5% increase in electricity costs, has led them to make the heartbreaking decision to close the mushroom farm.

"It's pretty much a sign of the times - everything is going up and mushrooms are not," farm manager Trevor Clark said.

"It costs $20 to grow a box of mushrooms, and most of the time we're lucky to get that for a box.

"There's a few farms that are struggling but are still going, but we got to the point that we were just breaking even, and it's not worth working seven days a week, 6am to 6pm, to break even."

Mr Clark said mushrooms were a fickle crop grown in cold rooms of around 20 degrees C, which are run continually, and pending electricity price increases would add an estimated $1500 to the quarterly power bill. He added that staffing costs, including compulsory superannuation contributions and weekend penalty rates, all added to operating costs, but prices could not be increased.

"We can't turn around and say these mushrooms are more expensive because they were picked on a Sunday," Mr Clark said.

"The main thing is the government changing the rules every five minutes - they say the cost of living is going up so we'll make the employer pay more, and we can't turn around and charge more, so it's a vicious circle."

Mr Clark said the farm would switch to small crop vegetable farming, which would employ only himself and his fianc?.

Lady Gaga to release new "ARTPOP" album in November

(Reuters) - Pop star Lady Gaga will release her next album, "ARTPOP", on November 11, a statement on the U.S. singer's website said on Friday.

The 27-year-old "Born This Way" singer - who cancelled part of a tour earlier this year to undergo hip surgery - will release a single from the new album on August 19.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, calls her fans "little monsters" and will release a social media app ahead of the album on September 1, which the statement said would seek to make connections between music, art, fashion and technology.

"Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ART culture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition", said the statement, referring to late U.S. pop artist Andy Warhol.

The Grammy-winning singer first rose to prominence in 2008 with the release of her album "Fame" and is well known for her outrageous costumes and provocative music videos.

McGill's Barber scores as Canada shocks USA at Nations Cup rugby tourney in England

McGill University:LONG EATON, England - July 12, 2013 - Emily Barber, a McGill University sophomore from Fenelon Falls, Que., scored a second-half try as Canada shocked the United States 25-15 to open the Nations Cup under-20 women's rugby tournament at Trent College in England, Thursday.

Barber, a 19-year-old management sophomore, tallied Canada's final try to give her side a commanding 25-10 lead after the conversion.

The U.S. opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the boot of Meya Bizer, who converted a penalty just to the left of the posts. The 3-0 lead was shortlived however, as Paige Ferries of Red Deer, Alta., scored a try, sprinting in from 15 yards. The play was converted by Jessica Neilson from out wide. Neilson's leg was in use again shortly after as the U.S. was penalized for hands in the scrum. The flyhalf kicked Canada into a 10-3 lead.

American prop Hope Rogers then forced her way over the line for a try and Anne Peterson's conversion knotted the score at 10-10.

Nadia Popov of Newmarket, Ont., and Barber added second-half tries to put the game out of reach.

The second half started like the first at a frantic pace and after a strong 20-minute push by Canada, a quick eight-man pick and charge led to Popov crashing over for a try next to the posts. Neilson added the conversion to give the Canucks a 17-10 lead after 50 minutes.

Some mistimed American defensive rushing led to a penalty, which was easily converted by Neilson for a 20-10 lead. After a penalty kick to the corner gave Canada a 22-10 advantage, Barber gave them a commanding 25-10 after forcing her way into the end zone from a lineout driving maul.

Bizer rounded out the scoring for the u.S. by running wide for an easy try.

The Canadian squad will have two days of rest before meeting England, the two-time defending tourney champions, on Sunday.

"It was absolutely incredible, standing there singing our anthem for the first time and the whole team really came together," said Neilson, a native of North Vancouver, B.C., who added a pair of conversions to finish with a game-high 10 points.

"(It) was a battle... we persevered in the first 10 minutes of the second half and got two quick scores and continued to focus on defence," said Team Canada head coach Sandro Fiorino, who gave credit to the entire team for their strong play but praised the defensive efforts of captain Sara Kaljuvee and Nadia Popov to keep Canada in the lead.

"I was happy with the tackling. We played strong defensively. The end goal is to take a look at the game film, make the adjustments that we need to make. We have to fix our scrums and our lineouts."

The Americans will face South Africa in their next game on Sunday (July 14).

"This is a great learning experience," said U.S. head coach Danielle Miller. "We dominated up front and had enough possession to score more points than we did. When you make mistakes and don't take your chances, at this level, you'll be punished, and that's exactly what Canada did today, and we congratulate them for that. We'll regroup, recover, and we're all confident there's plenty more to come from this team."

90 jobs at risk at Sheffield Remploy site

    [unable to retrieve full-text content]

    Source: www.thestar.co.uk --- Thursday, July 11, 2013
Around 90 Jobs are at risk at Sheffield?s Remploy factory after a company bidding to buy the Sheffield Road site pulled out. Barnsley-based Metalliform, which makes school furniture, was seeking to take over Remploy?s three furniture factories at Sheffield, Neath and Blackburn. But the company has now decided not to proceed. James Stribley, GMB organiser at Remploy, said workers were ?disappointed? and had been left fearing for their futures. ?Unless a new buyer comes forward, many of our members look like spending their life on benefits,? he added. Remploy has told Sheffield MPs it will contact other companies who previously expressed an interest in the furniture factories to see if they remain interested. Sheffield South East Labour MP Clive Betts said: ?I don?t know why Metalliform has withdrawn - although I don?t think it?s the end of the road for Sheffield Remploy.? Brightside and Hillsborough Labour MP David Blunkett added: ?Clive and I will both be seeking reassurance that a new preferred bidder does not pull out.? The Government is ending its subsidy to Remploy after a report by a disabled charity recommended the money would be better spent helping more people into mainstream Jobs. Remploy sites are being closed or sold. In a statement, Remploy said: ?As can happen during the due diligence phase, Metalliform have now advised that they are unable to continue their bid. Metalliform have retained an interest in certain aspect ...

Mini-golf comes alive at new museum exhibit & at 18-hole Palmetto course

Ophelia Bunuel stands at the putting green of the Riviera Country Club?s signature hole, No. 13, and prepares her swing. She hopes for a hole-in-one.

So does her mother Yvette Bunuel, who stands at her side and offers assistance. The golf club is almost as tall as Ophelia. After all, she?s just 3 years old and both mom and daughter are all smiles as they enjoy their outing.

Happily, there isn?t a line of angry adult members breathing down Ophelia?s neck or complaining about little kids on the course.

That?s because this isn?t the real Riviera No. 13 but a charming re-creation and part of the Coral Gables Museum?s new mini-golf exhibit, which plays off actual golf spots and landmarks in the city. The exhibit opened July 5 and will be open for play through September.

At the exhibit, there?s the Ole Biltmore No. 7 and its bridge traversing the Coral Gables Waterway?yes, you can walk across it as you would at the real course?and the recently restored Alhambra Water Tower sits here, too, with the golf hole just outside its center.

Other holes include a re-creation of the city?s seasonal Farmer?s Market with green frogs climbing bales of hay to get to the market. Golf pro Tracy Kerdyk, daughter of the Gables former mayor, the late Bill Kerdyk, designed a course, sponsored by her city commissioner-brother?s realty firm. Kerdyk?s vision comes complete with sand traps shaped like feet.

?She really did her research,? says museum director Christine Rupp.

At The Swamp, a massive blue University of Florida gator looms large over Sebastian, the University of Miami?s comparatively tiny stuffed mascot. Here, you putt into the gator?s yawning maw and hope the ball winds its way to the hole near the creature?s tail. This hole took Adriana Alvarez, 10, five strokes to clear. ?Some of them are so complicated,? the fifth-grader said, eager to try again.

Wish You Were Here, meantime, is a collection of oversized postcards of Gables landmarks like the Venetian Pool.

On that one, a hole-in-one is nearly impossible, laughs Rupp. The cards block easy access to the hole.

But dozens of people are trying. Some are lured to the museum?s three-month, playable miniature golf exhibit to stoke memories of an activity that has largely disappeared from the South Florida landscape.

Then there are youngsters like Ophelia and her brother Augustin, 1, who are far too young to have any memories of the game, which, like traditional golf, has clubs, holes and traps and, in some cases, a full 18-hole course. The objective is the same?to sink your ball in the hole using as few strokes as possible.

?I love local history stuff, so this is great,? said the senior Augustin Bunuel as he guided his year-old son at the Gables Water Tower hole.

?My husband saw this mini-golf thing and thought it would be fun for the kids,? Yvette Bunuel said. ?They incorporate art history around the museum so you are learning while you are doing [the mini- golf] so this is reinforcing the history, especially for the kids, so it?s beautiful.?

For Juan Manuel, 10, it?s a way to get a feel for the traditional game.

?I think it?s really nice and kind of cool that people can have a replica of all the golf courses and test it out and see if they like it,? says Juan, a fifth-grader at George Washington Carver Middle School in Coral Gables.

More than 150 accused in online wildlife sales

WASHINGTON (AP) ? More than 150 people face federal and state charges after authorities disrupted online wildlife trafficking operations involving tiger, leopard and jaguar pelts, elephant ivory and live birds.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the arrests Thursday after an undercover operation that included officers from 16 states, three federal agencies and three Asian countries.

Items seized under "Operation Wild Web" include the pelts of endangered big cats such as the Sumatran tiger, leopard and jaguar; live migratory birds such as the California scrub jay; whale teeth; elephant and walrus ivory; and a zebra pelt.

"Our message is clear and simple: The Internet is not an open marketplace for protected species," said Edward Grace, deputy assistant director for law enforcement for the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Working with counterparts in California, Texas, New York, Florida and Alaska and other states, federal officials targeted illegal wildlife sellers who operate through Craigslist, eBay and other Internet marketplaces and classified ads. Wildlife officers in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia ran similar operations at the same time.

The items were seized last August, although charges are still being brought in many cases. Six Southern California residents were charged Thursday with selling endangered species and animal parts, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles said.

"As a major platform for the illicit trade in wildlife, the Internet has become a dangerous place for animals," said Jeff Flocken, North American regional director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, an advocacy group that worked with the federal task force.

"Wildlife crimes are not only harmful to endangered species, they also pose serious threats to national and global security," Flocken said.

Illegal wildlife trade generates an estimated $19 billion a year worldwide and ranks fourth on the list of the most lucrative global illegal activities behind narcotics, counterfeiting and human trafficking, the animal welfare group said in a report last year.

Federal laws regulating the sale of wildlife include the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act; the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Lacey Act, which prohibits trade in wildlife, fish and plants that have been illegally taken, transported or sold.

Other states involved in "Operation Wild Web" were Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

    10 Reasons I Love Ashtanga Yoga - MindBodyGreen.com

    I practice and
teach all styles of yoga. I always ask a few questions of my clients and myself
before starting a yoga practice: What are the needs of the physical body? What are the needs of the mind? What are the needs of the spirit? Answers help determine if the practice will be Vinyasa yoga, Yin yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Viniyoga, Iyengar yoga, Power yoga, restorative yoga, or meditation.

One of my favorite schools of yoga is Ashtanga, a vigorous style of yoga that combines flow with static postures. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois began teaching Ashtanga yoga in 1948 with the?intention for every student to master each posture and series before moving on to the next one.

Below are 10 things I love about the Ashtanga practice:

    1. I stay in touch with my breath.?

Five even inhalations and exhalations with every pose, reminds me to always be in touch with and work on my breath. Strong teachers pace the breath calls in a progressive way to help stretch it.

    2. It?s a disciplined practice.?

In a led Ashtanga class, students practice in synchronicity and maintain extraordinary focus, which enhances the connectivity I feel with others and the universe at large.

    3. It?s a hard-core physical challenge.?

All of the Ashtanga series require enormous strength and flexibility. Ashtanga keeps me on the ball and gives me an incredible workout. People often ask me how I get my muscle tone, and Ashtanga-inspired yoga is one of the ways I tone-up.

    4. The practice demands deep concentration.?

I can?t tune out while doing Ashtanga yoga. To keep pace and protect my body from injury, there is nothing else I can think about other what I am doing at any given moment. It?s essential to pay close attention to alignment in this practice because the emphasis of Ashtanga yoga tends to be more on flow and breath and less on alignment (this is where an Iyengar background, which is completely alignment-focused, helps a lot).

    5. It makes me sweat.?

Ashtanga creates awesome internal body heat; there?s no need for external sources of warmth to break a ridiculous sweat. In addition to enhancing my circulation and making me feel light and strong, the elevation of my body temperature makes my muscles more pliable, enhancing my flexibility.

    6. It improves my muscle memory.?

There is a certain amount of repetition throughout the Ashtanga practice (for example: 5 sun salutations right at the get-go), which greatly improves my muscle memory. The result? What seems difficult at first gets easier over time.

    7. It?s a balanced practice.?

Asthanga sequences are replete with salutations, standing poses, seated postures, forward bends, twists, back bends, hip openers, inversions, arm balances, leg extension and flexion, and shoulder opening. There isn?t a single part of my body that ever feels left out of this practice.

    8. It's a powerful inward journey.?

With Ashtanga yoga I can truly be with my Self and get to know my spirit because pratyahara, withdrawal of the senses, enables me to shut out everything external to my mind and body.

    9. I stay present.?

The focused gaze, also known as the Dristhi, is a significant part of the Ashtanga practice. An astute Drishti keeps my eyes from wandering, which prevents a large amount of distraction (80% of what we perceive through our senses comes through our eyes; and, our memories are 80% imagery).

    10. There?s always room for improvement.?

Regardless of how advanced a practice may be, Ashtanga is a lifelong practice. Most bodies and certainly my own (which is quite strong and very flexible), need at least a lifetime to beautifully master the practice.?

UK: Family incomes and savings rise but household debt levels reach an all time high

    WEBWIRE ? Wednesday, July 10, 2013

? Average debts peak at almost ?13,000 ? highest recorded by report series
? But family incomes increase by more than ?1,200 a year
? More families get into a regular savings habit, reaching a record high of ?96 a month

UK families are experiencing a mixed bag of financial fortunes, the latest Aviva Family Finances Report reveals today. The report, which tracks the financial circumstances of different UK family types, shows that while incomes and savings habits are sneaking upwards, so are typical debts.

Typical family debts stack up to record levels

Despite their growing incomes and a greater commitment to saving every month, UK families are regularly turning to unsecured borrowing. Typical household debt has increased by 38% since May 2012 (?9,314) and now stands at ?12,834, the highest since this report series began in January 2011.

The biggest debts have actually been racked up through loans from friends and family, at an average of ?2,011 per household, while credit cards add a further ?2,006 and personal loans an additional ?1,959. Five per cent of families say they now rely on payday loans and a further 3% make use of pawnbrokers.

It is therefore a slight concern that the percentage of families making monthly debt repayments has fallen consistently in the last twelve months from 57% in August 2012 to 51% in January 2013 and just 45% in July 2013.

Good news as family income increases slightly

More positively however, UK families? typical monthly net income in July 2013 fell just short of the highest figure ever recorded by the report series, which was ?2,150 in April 2012.

With ?2,108 at their disposal each month ? 5% more than a year ago ? the typical family has ?1,260 more spending power over twelve months than they did in August 2012 when the typical monthly income was ?2,003.

Regular family savings see a surge

This extra income appears to be having a beneficial impact on people?s monthly saving habits. The typical family saves or invests ?96 per month in July 2013, up by 20% from ?80 in January to set a new record for the Family Finances Report.

For the first time since the series began, fewer than one in three families save nothing each month (31%) ? a significant improvement on the 40% recorded in January 2011. This edition also breaks new ground in terms of the number of families with no savings put away: down to 23% from a high of 33% in January 2011.

Expenses fall as families cut back on holidays and luxuries

The improvement in savings habits marries up with the fact that typical monthly expenditure among UK families fell for the first time since November 2011. The July 2013 average of ?1,748 represents a fall of 4% from the peak of ?1,819 in January 2013.

Luxury items are among the first to go when it comes to trimming household expenses. While spending on food has gone up by ?14 a month across all families in the last six months alone ? equivalent to ?168 per year ? a range of non-essential items including satellite TV subscriptions and recreation have all been scaled back to compensate. Financial constraints also appear to be prompting more families to forgo a holiday this year, with 51% spending on this expense in July 2013 compared with 54% in August 2012.

Louise Colley, protection distribution director for Aviva says: ?Since we began our report series, we?ve seen a common thread of people juggling their finances to balance the family books. As money matters improve in one area, this is often offset in another ? and this edition is no different. It?s great to see that families are saving more than ever, but slightly concerning that debt levels are continuing to climb.

?Building a savings pot is a fantastic step, but if debts are growing, families need to consider which is the more pressing need. We?d also urge people to take further steps and think about family protection to cover them against a sudden loss of income. Notably 55% of families say that unexpected expenses are one of their biggest financial fears so having this cover in place can provide invaluable peace of mind.?

    Methodology:

Data was sourced from the Aviva Family Finances Report series which used findings from over 18,000 people who are members of one of the six groups of families identified above via Canadean research. This report is a definitive look at the personal finances of families in the UK. Not only does it look at personal wealth, income sources and expenditure patterns but also tracks how these change across the different types of family unit.

In addition to the regular data, in each edition a spotlight will be shone onto a different relevant topic. This issue has a focus on how the cost of sending children to school impacts on family finances.

Pakistan president's aide killed in suicide attack

One of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's most trusted aides was killed in a suspected suicide bombing in the volatile port city of Karachi on Wednesday as he stopped his armoured vehicle to buy some fruit, police said.

Pakistan has suffered a spate of bombings since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sworn in last month, underscoring the challenges facing the nuclear-armed nation in taming a Taliban-linked insurgency.

A police officer in Pakistan's financial capital said Bilal Shaikh - Zardari's security chief who was always spotted next to the president during public appearances - was killed along with two others in a prosperous area of eastern Karachi.

"It seems that the suicide attacker walked up to Bilal Shaikh's vehicle and blew himself up outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle where Shaikh was seated," the senior police officer, Raja Umar Khattab, told Reuters.

About a dozen other people were wounded.

A police escort was accompanying Shaikh's white armoured sports utility vehicle when the attack took place. Police said an unidentified attacker walked up to the car and blew himself up just as Shaikh opened the door to get out.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place on the eve of the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan that is observed in Pakistan from Thursday.

The latest wave of attacks across Pakistan has brought an end to a period of relative calm after Pakistan's first ever transition between elected civilian governments that brought Sharif to office for the third time in a May election.

Last weekend, at least five people were killed when a bomb ripped through a busy restaurant street in Lahore, wounding dozens as people sat to dinner in the old part of Sharif's home city.

On June 30, at least 28 people were killed in the southwestern city of Quetta when a suicide bomber attacked a largely Shi'ite Muslim neighbourhood, highlighting growing sectarian tensions in the South Asian country of 180 million.

Shaikh - who had survived an earlier assassination attempt near his home in Karachi about a year ago - used to change his routes several times while travelling around one of Pakistan's most violent cities.

Like Zardari, he belonged to the Pakistan People's Party, which had been in power before the May election. Taliban-linked militants had previously targeted the secular party.

Both Zardari and Sharif have issued separate statements condemning the attack, a private television channel reported.

It was the first attack in Karachi since mid-June. At least nine people were killed when a bomb targeting the convoy of a senior judge exploded in the old city area. The judge survived. Pakistan-based Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.

Microsoft reports hackings linked to report by Google researcher

The Microsoft logo is seen at their offices in Bucharest

    By Jim Finkle

BOSTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said hackers have attacked some computers by exploiting a bug in Windows first disclosed two months ago by a Google Inc researcher, who came under fire at the time for publicizing the flaw without going to the software company first.

Microsoft provided few details about the attacks. In an advisory on Tuesday, it said hackers had launched "targeted attacks," a term generally used by security experts to refer to cyber attacks on corporate or government targets, with espionage and sabotage as the motive.

Google security engineer Tavis Ormandy's disclosure in May was controversial because he posted technical information on the Web that described the bug in the Windows operating system, which some experts said could help malicious hackers launch attacks, before Microsoft had released software to fix it.

Officials with Microsoft declined to comment when asked if they believed Ormandy's disclosure of the vulnerability had led to the attacks.

Ormandy also drew attention because he lashed out in a blog posting at long-time Google rival Microsoft, saying that its security division was difficult to work with. He advised other researchers to use pseudonyms and anonymous email when communicating with the software maker.

"It leaves a slightly bad taste in the mouth to see somebody who is a Google security researcher have a pop at Microsoft," said Graham Cluley, an independent security researcher.

Ormandy could not be reached. A Google spokesman declined comment, saying that Ormandy's Windows project was personal and not related to his work for the company.

Mets outlast Giants 4-3 in 16 innings

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Eric Young Jr. scored on shortstop Brandon Crawford's fielding error with two outs in the 16th inning, and the New York Mets outlasted the San Francisco Giants 4-3 in a game that ended early Tuesday morning.

Young singled with one out and stole second. After he advanced to third on Daniel Murphy's groundout, lefty Javier Lopez entered and intentionally walked David Wright.

Crawford couldn't handle pinch-hitter Anthony Recker's grounder, allowing Young to score and handing New York its first win in a game that went at least 15 innings after losing its first three this season.

This one lasted 5 hours, 26 minutes. It was the longest game in time and innings the Giants had played this season.

San Francisco almost staged one more rally.

Marco Scutaro walked leading off the final inning, and Buster Posey hit a one-out single for the first five-hit game of his career. But Bobby Parnell regrouped to strike out Pablo Sandoval and retire pinch-hitter Guillermo Quiroz on a grounder for his 16th save.

Posey went 5 for 8, including a two-run homer and two doubles for the Giants. San Francisco has lost 12 of 14 and is a season-high eight games below .500.

The Giants went 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and stranded 18 overall ? 13 in the last six innings.

Tim Lincecum and Matt Harvey each threw seven innings of three-run ball before the bullpens shut down the opposition.

Josh Edgin (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. George Kontos (2-2) allowed the one unearned run in 2 2-3 otherwise solid innings.

It was the 18th major league game to last at least 14 innings this season, two shy of last year's total, according to STATS.

The Mets improved to 1-3 in games of at least 15 innings this year. The last team to play that many in one season was the 2004 Minnesota Twins, who went 2-2, according to STATS.

By the time the final out was recorded at 12:42 a.m. local time, only a few thousand fans remained from an announced sellout crowd of 41,497. The ferry back to Oakland-Alameda had blown its departing horn at 11:30 p.m., and the final BART trains left about midnight.

The Giants even held a 14th-inning stretch for those who stayed. So many seagulls started to hover above the stands that the scoreboard operator asked fans to clap to scare them away.

Both teams had chances to end the game earlier.

With runners on second and third in the 11th, Crawford made a diving stop on Marlon Byrd's grounder at shortstop and recovered for a perfect throw from the outfield grass. In the 12th, Sandoval snagged Omar Quintanilla's liner at third and threw to first to get Kirk Nieuwenhuis for a double play.

The Giants blew a gift-wrapped opportunity when Posey doubled after his fly ball bounced off the glove of Murphy backpedaling from second while Byrd tried to make a sliding catch coming in from right. Sandoval was intentionally walked before Byrd caught Hunter Pence's slicing liner and Crawford flied out.

Brandon Belt, batting in the third spot for the first time in his career, was 0 for 8 with five strikeouts, including the final out of the 12th inning with two runners on base.

Cole Gillespie broke his bat grounding out in the 13th with runners on second and third, and Gregor Blanco grounded out with the bases loaded in the 15th.

The game started out with pop, with Posey sending a 3-1 fastball from Harvey to left to put the Giants ahead 2-0 in the first inning. It was Posey's 13th home run this season.

Byrd singled leading off the fifth for the first hit off Lincecum, and John Buck's double sliced San Francisco's lead to 2-1.

Young tripled leading off the sixth, and Murphy followed with the tying single. Murphy advanced to third on Scutaro's throwing error trying to get Wright out at first, and he scored when Davis grounded into a double play to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Lincecum had a season-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings. He gave up three runs, six hits and one walk. It was the 33rd time Lincecum has had at least 10 strikeouts in a game and the first time this year.

Other than Posey, Harvey had his way with San Francisco's lineup until late. He allowed three runs and six hits, striking out six and walking one.

Pence, who made a pair of diving catches in right field, tripled leading off the seventh. The ball hit the cement near the top of the right-field wall and ricocheted back onto the field.

Umpires reviewed the play and ruled that the triple stood, though the decision turned out to be an afterthought. Crawford immediately singled home Pence for the tying run.

NOTES: Mets LHP Jonathon Niese (shoulder inflammation) has been cleared to start throwing again. The team expects him back at some point this season. ... Mets RHP Shaun Marcum had his right hand examined by a specialist in St. Louis. With an off day Thursday, Harvey will take Marcum's spot in the rotation Saturday at Pittsburgh. ... Barry Zito (4-6, 4.44 ERA) starts for the Giants against Dillon Gee (6-7, 4.45) on Tuesday. Zito began warming up in the bullpen in the bottom of the 16th in case the Giants tied it.

Breakthrough could lead to 'artificial skin' that senses touch, humidity and temperature

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Using tiny gold particles and a kind of resin, a team of scientists has discovered how to make a new kind of flexible sensor that one day could be integrated into electronic skin, or e-skin. If scientists learn how to attach e-skin to prosthetic limbs, people with amputations might once again be able to feel changes in their environments.
