PITTSBURGH ? Carlos Ruiz?s first multiple-RBI hit in nine months and a solid outing by Cole Hamels carried the Phils to a 6-4 win over the Pirates?and a series win over the hottest team in baseball Thursday afternoon at a sold-out PNC Park.

The Pirates came into the series on a nine-game winning streak, a major-league-best 51-30 this year and 28-13 at home, but the Phillies won two of three in a stadium where they had lost 25 of 40 games since it opened in 2001.

Ruiz, who entered the game with just four RBIs in 29 games, hit a two-run single to left in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. This was his first multiple-RBI game this year. ?

Ruiz hit .387 on the road trip (12 for 31), increasing his average from .227 to .278.

Hamels, trying to avoid becoming the first major leaguer in five years and the first Phillie in 52 years to lose 12 of his team?s first 86 games, went seven innings for his third win in 18 starts.

The Phillies finished 5-5 on the 10-game road trip, losing three of four to the Dodgers in the middle but taking two of three from both the Padres to start the trip and the Pirates to finish it. They return home 41-45.

Starting pitching report
Hamels, the only 11-game loser in the majors, improved to 3-11 with his first win since June 5 and second win in his last 12 starts.

He went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, and five hits. He threw 103 pitches, didn?t walk a batter, and struck out eight.

Pirates starter Gerrit Cole, a 22-year-old bidding to become the first Pirate since 1939 to win his first five career starts, lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs. He left with a 2-1 lead before absorbing his first career loss.

Bullpen update
Justin De Fratus replaced Hamels and allowed three straight hits and two runs but escaped further damage by inducing Andrew McCutchen into a 5-4-3 double play started by John McDonald. Jonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless ninth for his 17th save in 21 opportunities.

In the field
Jimmy Rollins robbed Pirates first baseman Gaby Sanchez of a base hit in the sixth with a leaping snag of his line drive off Hamels.

At the plate
Ben Revere had three more hits and is 13 for 28 (.481) in his last seven games, raising his average from .272 to .290.

Since a low point of .237 on May 18, Revere is 53 for 160 (.331).

Delmon Young, Rollins and Ruiz each also had two hits. Young went 17 for 35 on the road trip (.486).

The Phillies took a 5-2 lead with a four-run sixth on Kevin Frandsen?s RBI single, Chooch?s two-run base hit and Revere?s RBI grounder. They added a run on Michael Young?s pinch sac fly in the eighth.

On the bases
Revere and Rollins both singled in the first and both were thrown out trying to steal. Revere stumbled as he broke for second and was thrown out 2-3-6.

Revere is now second in baseball having been caught stealing eight times. He?s on pace to be thrown out 15 times, which would be the most by a Phillie since Juan Samuel was thrown out 15 times in 1987. He?s now the Phillies? first-base coach.

Rollins is just 8 for 14 in steal attempts this year. He?s dropped from 18th (82.9 percent) in major-league history to 24th (82.2 percent) so far this year.
