McGill's Barber scores as Canada shocks USA at Nations Cup rugby tourney in England

McGill University:LONG EATON, England - July 12, 2013 - Emily Barber, a McGill University sophomore from Fenelon Falls, Que., scored a second-half try as Canada shocked the United States 25-15 to open the Nations Cup under-20 women's rugby tournament at Trent College in England, Thursday.

Barber, a 19-year-old management sophomore, tallied Canada's final try to give her side a commanding 25-10 lead after the conversion.

The U.S. opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the boot of Meya Bizer, who converted a penalty just to the left of the posts. The 3-0 lead was shortlived however, as Paige Ferries of Red Deer, Alta., scored a try, sprinting in from 15 yards. The play was converted by Jessica Neilson from out wide. Neilson's leg was in use again shortly after as the U.S. was penalized for hands in the scrum. The flyhalf kicked Canada into a 10-3 lead.

American prop Hope Rogers then forced her way over the line for a try and Anne Peterson's conversion knotted the score at 10-10.

Nadia Popov of Newmarket, Ont., and Barber added second-half tries to put the game out of reach.

The second half started like the first at a frantic pace and after a strong 20-minute push by Canada, a quick eight-man pick and charge led to Popov crashing over for a try next to the posts. Neilson added the conversion to give the Canucks a 17-10 lead after 50 minutes.

Some mistimed American defensive rushing led to a penalty, which was easily converted by Neilson for a 20-10 lead. After a penalty kick to the corner gave Canada a 22-10 advantage, Barber gave them a commanding 25-10 after forcing her way into the end zone from a lineout driving maul.

Bizer rounded out the scoring for the u.S. by running wide for an easy try.

The Canadian squad will have two days of rest before meeting England, the two-time defending tourney champions, on Sunday.

"It was absolutely incredible, standing there singing our anthem for the first time and the whole team really came together," said Neilson, a native of North Vancouver, B.C., who added a pair of conversions to finish with a game-high 10 points.

"(It) was a battle... we persevered in the first 10 minutes of the second half and got two quick scores and continued to focus on defence," said Team Canada head coach Sandro Fiorino, who gave credit to the entire team for their strong play but praised the defensive efforts of captain Sara Kaljuvee and Nadia Popov to keep Canada in the lead.

"I was happy with the tackling. We played strong defensively. The end goal is to take a look at the game film, make the adjustments that we need to make. We have to fix our scrums and our lineouts."

The Americans will face South Africa in their next game on Sunday (July 14).

"This is a great learning experience," said U.S. head coach Danielle Miller. "We dominated up front and had enough possession to score more points than we did. When you make mistakes and don't take your chances, at this level, you'll be punished, and that's exactly what Canada did today, and we congratulate them for that. We'll regroup, recover, and we're all confident there's plenty more to come from this team."
