Taylor Swift Dating RFK's Barely Legal Grandson, Conor Kennedy ...

By Amber Goodhand - Radar News Editor

Taylor Swift has her cougar claws into Robert F. Kennedy's barely legal grandson, Conor Kennedy, and RadarOnline.com has an exclusive photo and details of the cozy new couple.

Conor ? who just turned 18 last week ? has been quietly wooing the 22-year-old pop country singer for nearly a month and the two have been spotted all over Westchester County in New York and the Kennedy compound in Massachusetts.

PHOTOS: Celebrity Smooches

"I was out to lunch with a few friends in Mount Kisco and as we're walking down the street from the diner, we see Conor Kennedy emerge from a pizza shop with Taylor Swift right behind him," eyewitness Jeff L. exclusively told RadarOnline.com.

"They were holding hands and both had huge grins on their faces. Taylor playfully leaned into him as they walked."

PHOTOS: Couples We?d Like To See!

Conor lost his mother Mary Richardson Kennedy to suicide on May 16 when she hanged herself in the barn at their family's Bedford home.

And as Star magazine was first to report, Taylor's parents are separating after nearly 25 years of marriage, leaving both her and Conor with broken families and tragic times that one source says may be what is bonding the two young lovebirds.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's Power Couples

"Conor and Taylor actually have a lot in common and can really relate to each other," an insider said.

"And Conor is set to inherit his mother's fortune and oversee her estate now that he's a legal adult, which is very appealing to Taylor because she sees him as more of a man now and she needs that stability in her life."

Are you making the right income tax payments to HMRC? ? Concept ...

According to Her Majesty?s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), many people end up paying too much or too little Income Tax each year, but don?t understand why. HMRC have estimated that in the last tax year alone in the UK, over 5 million taxpayers either under or overpaid taxation. For those taxpayers notified that they had overpaid tax, the average tax rebate was estimated to be ?379. Taxpayers told that they had underpaid their taxes, needed to make an additional tax payment averaging ?537 to HMRC.

HMRC says it is important to know how to check you?re paying the right amount. Any underpayments will largely be collected by adjusting your tax code, meaning that you could take home less pay each month. HMRC quotes the main causes of incorrect payments as changes to benefits in kind provided by employers, people moving jobs frequently with gaps between employment and taxpayers having more than one job or pension, with tax-free allowances spread between them.

HMRC depends on accurate and up to date personal finance information about individual taxpayers and if you are not personally handling your tax affairs, the accuracy depends upon someone else, for example your employer, accountant or pension provider. Every year, HMRC checks that the amount of tax and national insurance deducted in-year matches the information held on its records in an ?end of year reconciliation? process. HMRC provides every taxpayer with a Tax Code. This is used by your employer, accountant or pension provider to calculate the amount of tax to deduct from your income.

If your code is wrong, you will pay either too little or too much tax and if the ?end of year reconciliation? picks this up, you could either find yourself with a nice surprise; a refund, or, more significantly, a nasty shock; a demand for hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds, as HMRC claws back the money you should have paid. Incorrect tax calculations highlight the need for the self-employed, employers and employees to keep HMRC informed of any changes in circumstances.

One way in which you can try to avoid unpleasant end of year tax demands, is to understand and check your tax code. Don?t bin it, file it or lose it without checking that it is correct. Your tax code determines your current income tax liability and informs your own and HMRC?s calculations of income tax. A wrong tax code leads to wrong tax payments.

As well as getting a tax code notification from HMRC for each tax year ? usually in your PAYE Coding Notice, you can find your tax code on a pay slip, on P60 and P45 forms, or by going online if you are enrolled for Self-Assessment. Checking that the different letters and numbers that make up your tax code are correct is relatively easy and certainly important, particularly if you?ve got more than one job or source of income, or if you change jobs a lot. HMRC provides information on how to read and understand your tax code.

Debt crisis: Germany's Angela Merkel and Italian PM Mario Monti vow to protect euro

However, Germany has effectively blocked the plans to a direct bailout of the Spanish banking system. As a result, the EU?s ?100bn (?78bn) bank package will be a loan to the Spanish state.

This has unsettled markets and last week raised fears that Spain itself would been a bailout pushed Spanish borrowing cost to fresh euro-era highs of near 8pc.

Although comments from Mario Draghi, the ECB President, Germany and France to they are do everything to maintain the euro did calm fears on Friday, worries still remain with September regarded as a "crunch time" for the euro.

In September a top German court rules on the new eurozone rescue fund, the anti-bailout Dutch vote in elections, Greece tries to renegotiate its financial lifeline, and decisions need to be made on whether taxpayers suffer huge losses on state loans to Athens.

Earlier on Sunday, Wolfgang Sch?uble, the German finance chief, said no further concessions can be made to Greece as he prepared to meet US Treasury Secretary on the German island of Sylt. The two will discuss the "US, European and global economies".

Mr Sch?uble told Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday that the current bailout plan for Greece was already "very accommodating", adding: "I cannot see that there is any room left for further concessions. The problem did not arise because the programme had faults, but rather because Greece did not implement it fully enough."

He said it was not helpful now to speculate about giving Greece more time or more money.

"It is not a question of generosity. The question is rather, is there plausible way for Greece to manage this."

He also ruled out a further debt writedown for Greece, saying it would "only destroy trust".

Wall Street likely to continue hopeful mood

NEW YORK -- Stocks took off at the end of the week, drawn by the allure of a helping hand from the world's two most powerful central banks. Traders are unlikely to resist those charms again next week.

The U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank both meet next week amid investor expectations of action to stimulate economic growth and, in the case of the ECB, tackle the spreading euro zone debt crisis.

The drumbeat of weak economic data and disappointing U.S. corporate profits and outlooks mean central banks can be stocks' best friends.

Equity prices tend to rise sharply in the hours before a Fed statement like the one expected on Wednesday as traders and investors jockey for position and a chance to make a profit.

Next week's calendar has a double-whammy. The Fed's monetary policy statement will come one day before an ECB meeting packed with intrigue. ECB President Mario Draghi said earlier this week the bank was ready to do whatever was necessary, within its mandate, to save the euro.

"People in this business like to get in front of big events, especially if (they) could be very, very positive for the market," said Brian Reynolds, chief market strategist at agency brokerage Rosenblatt Securities.

In that sense the strategy "is almost like a lottery ticket," he said.

But was that ticket already cashed? The S&P 500 rallied to levels not seen since May on Friday, a rally that was sparked a day earlier after Draghi stoked expectations the ECB might resume its Securities Markets Programme (SMP) and possibly adopt more aggressive quantitative easing.

Reports of meetings with the head of Germany's Bundesbank fueled a Friday rally that outpaced Thursday's gains.

Equity markets have for weeks been leaning on hoped-for stimulus from the Fed or ECB. Despite weeks of softening economic data, including a dismal payrolls report for June and a poor outlook for corporate profits, the S&P 500 has risen in seven of the past 10 weeks. It closed on Friday near a three-month high.

At the same time that traders position themselves to benefit from the Fed's latest easy-money policy, those betting against market gains get out of the way and selling pressure recedes.

"It's very scary to short the market ahead of a Fed meeting," said Dennis Dick, a proprietary trader at Las Vegas-based Bright Trading and co-founder of Premarketinfo.com. "So you have this short-covering that drives prices up."

That helps explain the rise in stocks in the 24 hours prior to the U.S. central bank's policy decisions -- a pattern that tends to hold irrespective of what the Fed actually says in its statement.

Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York performed a study of the pattern.

Starting mid-afternoon the day before such decisions, stocks in the United States, Britain, Germany and other major markets begin a sharp rise and don't stop, on average, until just before the Fed unveils its policy decision at 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) the following day.

Since 1994 a whopping 80 percent of the premium in gains of U.S. stocks over yields on short-term government bonds has been earned in these 24-hour periods, the study found.

The pattern has grown starker as the Fed took increasingly aggressive actions to rescue the U.S. economy from recession. The two rounds of major asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, or QE1 and QE2, in recent years strongly boosted stocks.

"Perhaps this shows markets have given the Fed their seal of approval," said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

"At least from a market participant perspective, they are confident the Fed will fulfill its mandate. I try to talk to individual investors to remind them that the stock market is going to react much more quickly than the economy to what the Fed does," he said.

The focus on central bank meetings will get in the way of a heavy week of earnings for S&P 500 companies at a time when the outlook continues to worsen.

Major companies due to report include AIG , Kellogg , Procter & Gamble
, Kraft Foods , Pfizer
, MasterCard and General Motors.

Among the 290 companies in the S&P 500 index that have reported earnings for the second quarter, about 67 percent have beaten analysts' estimates, slightly higher than the long-term average of about 62 percent.

But just 40 percent have beaten on revenues, the worst record since the first quarter of 2009.

More worrisome is the market's outlook. Third-quarter earnings are now expected to decline 0.4 percent from a year ago, compared with an expected rise of 1.4 percent last week, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Also on investors' radar next week is another legal battle in California over patents between Apple and South Korea's Samsung. The trial's outcome could reshape the smartphone and tablet wars between the iPhone's maker and its rivals.

Will the UN reverse its ivory ban?

Delegates overseeing a worldwide endangered species treaty have adopted a plan to allow ivory to be legally traded on the global market.

Delegates overseeing a 175-nation endangered species treaty adopted measures Friday intended to curb smuggling of elephant ivory and rhino horn, including a new plan to eventually allow ivory to be legally traded again in global markets.

The plan for allowing ivory to be traded legally for the first time in more than two decades will be fine-tuned and presented again in October, then considered for final approval next March in Bangkok. It was among the most hotly debated items at a weeklong meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES, that ended Friday.

Some 300 delegates in Geneva agreed by consensus to a series of measures and sanctions on trade in endangered species. The ivory plan envisions a resumption in trading only from existing stocks gathered from elephants that have died as a result of natural causes.

A global ban on ivory trading took effect in 1989 to curb elephant poaching in Africa, but in the past decade the problem grew again with rising Asian demand for ivory chopsticks, statues and jewelry.

The long-running global debate over elephants has focused on the benefits of raising revenue from legal ivory sales that could be used to pay for conservation measures and ways of protecting local communities that live in close proximity to large and sometimes dangerous animals.

Proponents also have argued that legalizing the trade could dampen prices and, therefore, demand for ivory on the black market, but some conservation groups have said they remain skeptical that it will work and that in fact sales could only increase poaching. No culling or poaching would be authorized under the plan.

Much of the focus was on how to strengthen enforcement while also dampening consumer demand. Delegates agreed that effected nations must do more to control their markets and combat international ivory smuggling.

"You may say that there has been a sort of polarization here (over ivory) ? will you ban it totally, or will you allow something and if you allow something, you may also encourage smuggling," said Oystein Storkersen, the head of nature management in Norway who chairs one of CITES' main committees, told reporters. "As long as there is strong demand in the consumer countries, we probably will see people willing to risk going for ivory in the source countries."

Delegates also agreed to require that Vietnam, one of the biggest consumers of rhino horn, report back by September on how it is cracking down and to verify that rhino hunting trophies are taken for non-commercial reasons.

In parts of Asia, such as Vietnam, rhino horn can fetch the equivalent of U.S. street values for cocaine. It is crushed and consumed by people who believe it can cure diseases including cancer, fever and even hangovers, but doctors generally dispute that.

Delegates suspended trade in five reptiles ? the African chameleon in Niger, Fea's chameleon in Equatorial Guinea, the girdled lizard in Mozambique, and the yellow-headed temple turtle and orange-headed temple turtle in Laos ? and one African tree, teak, in Ivory Coast.

Delegates also decided to monitor crocodiles in Colombia, birds from the Solomon Islands, and a dozen other captive-breeding and ranching operations around the world.

But they agreed to lift previous suspensions and allow sustainable trade to resume for African teak and cherry in Congo, and for African grey parrots in Cameroon.

(AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

Kofi Annan, who brokered the agreement, expressed concern Saturday about the weapons buildup in Aleppo. "I remind the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, and urge them to exercise restraint and avoid any further bloodshed."

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said their thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

Subsidy cut hits new hydro plans

The main operator of Scottish hydro power stations said it does not expect to build new ones due to a subsidy cut.

SSE, which trades north of the border as Scottish Hydro, had planned several new hydro schemes in the Highlands.

It also warned changes to Whitehall's support regime for renewable power could significantly harm biomass burning and wind farm development.

RWE/nPower, which was also planning new hydro, is understood to be considering freezing its plans after subsidy cuts.

The news comes after the government announced a 30% reduction in the Renewable Obligation Certificates companies receive per unit of energy produced.

That has been awarded at the same rate as onshore wind farms, and after a Whitehall battle, they are also facing a cut of 10%.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced the reductions on Wednesday, which were less than had been expected for wind farms, but on condition that could be reviewed again soon.

'New uncertainty'

Although the DECC statement only applies south of the Border, industry experts believe there is little flexibility for the Scottish government to offer more generous subsidies without hitting Scottish customer bills disproportionately.

Scottish Power, as another operator of existing big hydro schemes, responded to the DECC announcement with a plea to the Scottish government not to implement the same 30% cut.

SSE said the new regime will not affect existing plants or those under construction.

"Nevertheless, it means SSE no longer expects to develop any new conventional hydro electric schemes and the scope to increase generation of electricity from biomass at coal-fired power stations is significantly reduced," the firm said.

The statement went on to say the review of onshore wind farm subsidies for projects after March 2014 "introduced a new uncertainty that could potentially restrict the future development of this technology".

Pump storage

Among the hydro projects planned by Scottish Hydro/SSE is one between Achnasheen and Lochcarron in Wester Ross, capable of producing 3.5 megawatts, sufficient for 3,300 homes.

Another, for a 7.5MW capacity, on the Kildermorie Estate near Alness in Easter Ross is in planning. A third, near Alyth in Perthshire, would produce 10MW and is listed by SSE as being in development.

Two much larger SSE projects are for pump storage - pumping water uphill using excess power from other sources when demand is low, and then releasing the water when demand surges.

They are both rated at 600MW, capable of powering 230,000 homes, for short periods at least, and a smaller such development is being planned for an expansion of the existing Sloy station near Loch Lomond.

But as they are not conventional hydro stations, they do not currently get any subsidy. SSE has not put these pump storage projects on hold.

Obama and Clinton meet at fundraisers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama raised nearly $2.5 million Friday at three fundraising events, including one where he crossed paths with President Bill Clinton. The other two were hosted by a Virginia businessman and philanthropist who helped hundreds of struggling Americans attend Obama's inaugural in 2009.

Obama met Clinton at a hotel where Obama was attending an intimate fundraiser with 25 donors that brought in $1 million for his re-election bid. Clinton was there hosting a fundraiser for Rep. John Lewis, the Democratic congressman from Georgia. The White House said the two presidents had the opportunity to say hello.

Later, Obama flew on Marine One to nearby McLean, Va., for two separate events at the home of Earl W. Stafford, an Obama supporter who in 2009 spent $1.6 million so that homeless and jobless people and wounded soldiers could attend Obama's inaugural and its celebratory balls.

Those two events combined raised at least $1.4 million.

Obama, addressing about 270 at a reception in Stafford's house, stuck to his economic themes and said his rival Mitt Romney wants to provide more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and would do so by gutting investments in education, infrastructure and health care.

"This is not a recipe for long-term growth," Obama said.

Speaking to a largely black audience at the reception, Obama said he understood the struggles they've faced building a better life for their families and that he would fight for them if re-elected.

"I know where you've been because that's where I've been," he said.

The events capped a week in which the president tapped donors in four states: California, Oregon, Washington and Louisiana. His estimated total from that fundraising swing was at least $7 million.

Geithner: I did all I could to address rate-rigging

LIVE VIDEO ? Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner testifies before the House Committee on Financial Services.

By NBC News and wire services

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, under pressure for allegedly not doing enough to stop fraudulent manipulation of a key benchmark interest rate, told lawmakers Wednesday he alerted the appropriate authorities ?early on.?

Geithner said he became aware of the problem in 2008, when he was president of the New York Federal Reserve, an influential bank regulator. That contradicts a statement from the New York Fed saying the institution knew about problems with the LIBOR rate as early as 2007.

?At that time, this is in the spring of 2008, we took a very careful look at these concerns, we thought those concerns were justified,? Geithner said. ?And we took the initiative to bring those concerns to the attention of the broader U.S. regulatory community, including all the agencies that have responsibility for market manipulation and abuse.?

The LIBOR rate, which is fixed via a poll of banks by?the British Bankers? Association, an industry group in London, is the benchmark for setting payments on some $360 trillion worth of financial instruments, ranging from credit cards to more complex derivatives, such as futures contracts.

Last month, U.K. bank Barclays paid?a $453 million?fine?to U.S. and U.K. authorities after admitting to giving false information as part of setting the interest rate.?Dozens of big banks such as JPMorgan Chase are now under investigation.

Geithner has repeatedly defended his actions regarding the rate, saying that he told the British authorities, who oversee the British Bankers' Association, as soon as he was aware of the problems with LIBOR. He said he?sent an email to Bank of England Governor Mervyn King in June 2008 with recommendations for dealing with it.

Last week, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers the process for setting the rate was structurally flawed and said reforms were in the hands of the private UK banking group responsible for LIBOR.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Tribeca Vision Recommends Ways to Protect the Eyes from Damage ...

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

Tribeca Vision announces the benefits of regular eye exams from Manhattan optometrists. The eyes can easily become damaged by something as commonplace as sunlight. Regular eye exams help to catch and prevent vision problems that may develop.

Eye doctors in Manhattan warn that sunlight can damage the surface tissue of the eyes as well as the cornea and lens. Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to the development of cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the eye that could include cancer.

Though most people are aware of the dangers that UV light poses to the skin, few think about the damage caused to the eyes. It is important to begin adopting habits that will protect the eyes at an early age so as to prevent years of damage from ultraviolet radiation.

Tribeca Vision, a Manhattan optometrist, recommends several tips for protecting the eyes from the sun. One is to wear sunglasses that block UV rays. Make sure that these glasses specifically state that they block one hundred percent of UVA and UVB rays. If it does not say this, then some of these harmful rays will reach the eyes and cause damage over time.

Manhattan optometrists recommend buying sunglasses that are made to wrap around the eye. This prevents harmful rays from getting in at the sides. Additionally, always wear sunglasses over contact lenses. Some contact lenses have UV protection, but it is usually not strong enough to block out all of the rays.

An overcast sky does not mean that the sun?s rays are blocked. UV rays can penetrate thin cloud cover and haze. Always wear protection when going outside. Sun damage can occur at any time of the year, so always have those sunglasses handy. Eye doctors in Manhattan warn that some of the worst eye damage is actually caused in the winter when light reflects off of snow.

Regular eye exams are needed to guarantee that the eyes are healthy and undamaged. The eye doctors in Manhattan at Tribeca Vision can provide a comprehensive eye exam and discuss the steps for preventing eye damage from harmful rays of light.

Home sun protection

You may be protected from the sun, but is your furniture?

If I?m going to a Rockies game or taking a hike in the mountains, there?s usually a small arsenal of sunscreen coming with me.

I don?t want to wind up looking like a tomato, so I reapply throughout the day and protect my face with a hat and sunglasses.

The threat of a nasty sunburn helps us remember to protect our skin, but what about our houses? They might not turn red and start asking for aloe, but our houses and furniture are both susceptible to sun damage, just like we are.

While you don?t want to start mixing SPF 30 into your carpet, there are a few simple ways to protect different parts of your house from the sun.

Here?s How:

1. Outdoor patio. This area generally gets a lot of sunshine, so your patio furniture can fade, bleach, crack and dull over time. To prevent damage, consider investing in weather covers to protect your patio furniture when it?s not in use. You can also purchase an outdoor furniture protector spray for about $10 at your local hardware store. If you have aluminum patio furniture, try using car wax as a protector.

2. Living room furniture. If your living room receives a lot of light, the fabric of your furniture can become brittle, and it will break more easily. This is especially true for smoother fabrics like silk. To protect your furniture, pull the blinds during the brightest part of the day. Or, try covering the areas that receive the most sun with a decorative blanket.

3. Rugs. The colors of your rug will fade over time if the rug is placed in a very sunny area. If only part of the rug is getting rays, this will wind up looking a little odd. Rotate your rug end-to-end once a year to balance out any possible color changes.

4. Artwork. Paintings that are displayed in direct sunlight will fade and lose color. Check the location of your paintings to see if they?re getting sun and, if necessary, move them to an area that does not receive direct sunlight. If possible, consider framing your artwork under glass with UV protection.

Marlins trades Hanley Ramirez to Dodgers

MIAMI (AP) ? Former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez was traded from Miami to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, part of what appears to be the third big fire sale in Marlins' history.

Left-handed reliever Randy Choate also was dealt to the Dodgers. The Marlins received right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and minor league pitcher Scott McGough.

The trade came two days after the Marlins sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for pitching prospect Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers.

"We weren't winning with the group we had and we want to make changes," Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said.

As the team prepared to move into its new $634 million retractable-roof ballpark, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria hired Ozzie Guillen as manager and committed $191 million in a five-day span during the offseason to sign All-Stars Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell. The team agreed to star in a Showtime reality series, "The Franchise."

In their colorful new uniforms, the Marlins were 31-23 through June 3, just percentage points out of first place, then lost 17 of their next 20 games. They started Wednesday 45-52, fourth in the NL East and 12? games out of first place.

"These are tough trades, but when you underachieve at the level this team has underachieved and has not won at the level we expected it to ? we have talked about restructuring and this is part of it," Beinfest said.

Miami might not be done, with pitcher Josh Johnson and Bell also trade possibilities before Tuesday's deadline to make swaps without waivers.

"Be careful with what you think, what you say, and how you smile because you might be next (to get traded)," Guillen said. "That's the way it has to go if you don't perform. That's business."

After winning the 1997 World Series, the Marlins jettisoned high-priced stars Moises Alou, Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Robb Nen, Jeff Conine and Devon White. They won the Series again in 2003, then allowed Ivan Rodriguez, Ugueth Urbina, Derrek Lee, Mark Redman, Braden Looper and Juan Encarnacion to depart.

The 28-year-old Ramirez is hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs, far from his big season in 2009 when he hit a league-leading .342 with 24 homers and 106 RBIs.

"I am sad to go," Ramirez said. "This will be always be my home, but it will just be a little different."

A three-time All-Star, he shifted from shortstop to third base this season to make room for Reyes.

"It's sad to see Hanley go to another team," Reyes said. "We developed a great relationship. I feel he was one of my real good friends on the team. Anytime someone close to you goes to another team it kind of surprises you a little bit and you get sad a little bit, but still need to go out on the field and play the game."

He joined several other stars who changed teams in recent weeks, including Ichiro Suzuki, Wandy Rodriguez and Kevin Youkilis.

"He meant a lot to this organization, a premium talent, an uber talent in a lot of respects," Beinfest said.

Los Angeles is 2? games behind NL West-leading San Francisco. After a 32-15 start, the Dodgers are just 21-30 since.

"You never know what a change of scenery will do for somebody," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "We see him as one of our main guys."

After filing for bankruptcy in 2011, the Dodgers were bought from Frank McCourt for $2 billion on May 1 in a move that led to Stan Kasten becoming team president.

Ramirez has a $15 million salary this year and is owed $15.5 million next year and $16 million in 2013.

"We're not going to let money stand in the way of a true baseball deal. And if we can improve the club, the financial piece of it will always be there," Colletti said. "It's kind of a liberating thing because we're able to make a baseball trade. We found a player that we really like, that we think can add to our lineup and at the same time show the guys who have been busting their tail for the last three months that we acknowledge how hard they've played and to get them the support that we can. It's good to not have to worry too much about what it's going to cost you from a financial standpoint. This (ownership) group is in to win."

Ramirez will play shortstop for now for the Dodgers. Dee Gordon is on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb that could sideline him until mid-August and is batting only .229 with 17 RBIs.

"I look at it as he has a clean slate," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Anything that's happened in his past has nothing to do with me, has nothing to do with the Dodgers. It's basically moving forward."

Choate, a 36-year-old lefty, is 0-0 with one save and a 2.49 ERA in 44 games. He began his big league career with the New York Yankees in 2000 and also has pitched for Arizona and Tampa Bay.

Eovaldi, a 22-year-old righty, is 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA. He made his major league debut last season. Eovaldi will make his Marlins debut on Saturday in a start against San Diego.

Tunisia appoints controversial bank governor

Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly (ANC) on Tuesday appointed Chedly Ayari as the new central bank governor, after weeks of heated debate and another stormy session in the interim parliament.

"The designation of Chedly Ayari as governor of the central bank has been adopted," parliament speaker Mustafa Ben Jaafar said following the vote.

Opposition MPs were swift to condemn the circumstances of the vote, in which 190 MPs participated, despite only 156 being present at the start of the debate three and a half hours earlier.

It was also a tight race, with 97 lawmakers backing Ayari, 89 of them opposing his appointment and four abstaining.

The nomination of Ayari, 79, has been strongly criticised by the opposition and by some within the ruling coalition because of his age and his links with the former regime of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted in an uprising last year.

The controversial sacking of Ayari's predecessor, Mustapha Kamel Nabli, triggered a heated debate in parliament between the government and the opposition, which accused the ruling coalition of seeking to control the bank.

Speaking after his appointment, the economist vowed to preserve the independence of the bank and the stability of the Tunisian dinar, as well as working to alleviate social problems.

"If our objectives are to reduce unemployment, to reduce poverty... the central bank must work in the same way" as the government, he said.

Minister of planning under Habib Bourguiba, the founding president of independent Tunisia, Ayari worked for various international financial institutions, including the African Development Bank, before Beni Ali recruited him as an adviser.

Rached Ghannouchi, who heads the ruling Islamist party Ennahda, acknowledged that Ayari's appointment was problematic, but argued that his abilities were needed.

"The state... must distinguish between those who were up to their necks in the dictatorship and corruption (of the former regime) and should be judged, and professionals who had limited relations with the regime," he wrote on his Facebook page.

In the gallery of the assembly on Tuesday, some spectators waved placards urging Ayari to "get out," the same slogan used by activist in last year's uprising against Ben Ali.

Christian tablets and cultural engagement - Think Christian

Specialty retailer Family Christian bills the newly released Edifi as the ?world?s first Christian tablet." During a recent segment on his satirical news show, Stephen Colbert gave Family Christian a tip of the hat for the tablet. Colbert said he even prefers his electrical outlets to take the shape of a cross, stating that, as a good Christian, ?I don?t want AC/DC, only JC."

The Edifi is yet another attempt to add a little bit of Jesus into a sellable product, repackaging it for a niche market desperate to stay protected from the evils of culture. Here, as is often the case, worried parents are a prime demographic.

I am the mom of four kids, ages 14 to 21. I?m well-acquainted with that anxious demographic. Few decisions for our kids - or ourselves - require more discernment than the decisions we make about media. If I?m understanding the Edifi?s features and benefits - especially its "Safe Search Wi-Fi web browsing" - thanks to Family Christian we no longer need to deal with the business of discerning between good and evil because they?ve done the work of guarding our eyes for us.?

Fear is a powerful motivator for marketing. Fear fuels the anxiety we parents share when it comes to raising our kids in a complex culture. It?s tempting to let someone else do the discernment work for us, but this is not what we are called to as parents. We are called to shepherd our children within the culture rather than close them off from the culture in which we live.

It?s tempting to let someone else do the discernment work for us, but this is not what we are called to as parents.

This is scary, unpredictable work. And the outcome is not guaranteed. We may give our kids media guidelines and they end up seeing harmful material anyway. Sometimes it feels like the only solution is to restrict all media use, shut out the world and hope for the best. This is what makes Edifi?s safeguards so appealing.?

The story goes that young circus elephants are trained by linking a chain from their rear leg to a stake in the ground. The elephant will walk around that stake in circles trying, but unable, to escape. Eventually the elephant is so conditioned to walk in that rutted circle, he?ll stay there even when the chain is removed and replaced with twine.

This story serves as a cautionary metaphor for the way we train our children. We may set heavy restrictions throughout their childhood, hoping to keep them protected from running outside the boundaries. Our good intentions are to train them to stay in that safe, predictable track after they are no longer under our supervision.

However, unlike sure-fire training methods for circus animals, there are several possible outcomes to this restrictive parenting style for our children. None of them train our families to think, respond, confess, mature or forgive like a Christian.?

In other words, it?s not Edifi?s job to train our kids to use media as a Christian. It?s ours.

And we need all the help we can get. In the past 21 years, my husband and I have learned a few guidelines to protect our children: limiting screen time on weekdays, making sure the whole house is media free a few hours each day, not allowing computers or televisions in the kids? bedrooms, having shared passwords for all online accounts. The best life lessons we?ve learned, though, have come from the cracks in our guidelines, the opportunities we?ve had to both give and receive grace within the walls of our home.??

The difficult job of shepherding our children to be like Christ is what makes our families, not our technology, Christian.

What Do You Think?

  • Do you see advantages to a product like Edifi or does it shelter Christians in harmful ways?
  • What guidelines for media consumption do you follow, whether for your children or yourself?
  • What are ways to live faithfully as a Christian within the culture at large?
