Traditional Home in Virginia Hampton Roads area - Debbiedoo's

Hello Debbie and Debbiedoos readers!

I?m so thrilled to be guesting here today and give you a tour of my home!

? We lived in Virginia, in the Hampton Roads area, for three years. (we are a military family and move around from time to time!)

?and this was our beautiful Virginia home!

?

Our home celebrates our military lifestyle and our family?s past.? We were fortunate enough to inherit this gorgeous Mahogany dining room set from my husband?s family.

? We?ve had so much fun entertaining friends and family at this table! (You can see more of my dining room here).

Dining Room Setting for Four

The pretty chandelier has pineapple details on it?did you know that the pineapple is an international symbol of hospitality and welcome?

Our home is filled with memories of our travels and each time my husband is deployed he returns with something locally made for our home!

Our foyer with a handmade carpet from Afghanistan and masks from Djibouti, Africa:

Here?s a close-up of the sea green vase and DIY Photo Art I have in my foyer:

I created a spa like feel in our Main Floor Bathroom:

Here?s our Back Entryway ? a white framed mirror is the focal point of our entryway and adds a sense of height to the antique school desk.? A rush basket works as extra storage.? I tied on a metal number 4, as in Setting for FOUR, (this is actually a house number!) to the basket with twine. :

I love the layout and fireplace in our Family Room:

The pillars flanking the Dining room add a nice architectural detail to the room and separates it from the foyer and living room open concept areas:

Vacation mementos from a fun trip to Belize ? a picture of our boys bodysurfing on the beach and a shell we found while scuba diving:

I also love to add meaning to our home by filling it with our children?s accomplishments and creativity!

I framed a piece of art that my youngest son drew for me a few years ago.? It?s a picture of our family all holding hands!? I love all of the Love arrows interconnecting us!? Check out how I turned this piece of art into a Turn Children?s Art into Tea Towels DIY.

Adding ?our story? to our home is deeply meaningful to our family. And a large part of ?our story? is that we are a proud military family; our home celebrates my husband?s military career, service to country and all of the personal sacrifices he has made.

I like to add his military memorabilia to our home in subtle ways.? My husband?s pewter mug adorns our fireplace mantel.? Traditionally, when a military member is posted and as a way to say goodbye, each member of my husband?s regiment is presented with a pewter mug monogrammed with his regiment?s insignia on it.? Here I filled it with boxwood clippings from our yard.? I love the play of the silvery pewter against the green foliage!

My Spring Mantel:

?and here is my hubby?s pewter mug on my Coastal Summer Mantel too!

I also love to bring the beauty of nature indoors, add plants and fresh flowers!

On our sofa table I placed this gorgeous white orchid in a silver ice bucket.? I also added these easy handmade DIY Love Votive Candles for a soft glow at night!

How to Decorate a Sofa table from Setting for Four

In spite of my love of home decor and the pretty things I add to the rooms, the most beautiful thing about our home is when all of my family is actually physically together in it..?it really is as simple as that.

With my husband often away on military training exercises or deployed overseas and now with my 19 year old son away at military college and officer cadet development training, to have all four of us together in our home is truly, a real treasure.

We are a Military Family

~ After all, family is the true meaning of any home! ~

I?m close to getting our new home ?Home Tour? worthy but I?m not quite there yet!

But to give you a sneak peak, here is my entryway!

Iran's Rouhani misquoted in remarks on Israel: state TV

DUBAI | Fri Aug 2, 2013 9:30am EDT

DUBAI (Reuters) - Two days before his inauguration as Iran's new president, Hassan Rouhani said on Friday that Israeli occupation of Palestinian land had inflicted a "wound" on the Muslim world, according to a segment of his remarks broadcast on Iran's state-run Press TV.

An earlier report by Iran's student news agency ISNA had quoted Rouhani as saying: "The Zionist regime is a wound that has sat on the body of the Muslim world for years and needs to be removed."

That version echoed the fiercely anti-Israeli language of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but was swiftly repudiated by Iranian state media, which said unidentified news agencies had distorted Rouhani's remarks.

Press TV then broadcast an excerpt from an exchange between Rouhani and journalists at a rally to mark Iran's annual Al Qods Day in support of the Palestinians.

"After all, in our region there's been a wound for years on the body of the Muslim world under the shadow of the occupation of the holy land of Palestine and the beloved al-Qods (Jerusalem)," Rouhani said in the segment.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seized on ISNA's version of Rouhani's comments, saying they showed the reputedly moderate Iranian cleric was as hostile to Israel as Ahmadinejad, whose denial of the Holocaust and description of Israel as a "cancerous tumor" prompted international condemnation.

The United States and its allies suspect Iran of seeking a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran says its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes, but Israel regards it as a threat to its existence and refuses to rule out military action.

With a more pragmatic president in Iran, Western countries may see a better chance for diplomacy to lead to a deal to curb Tehran's uranium enrichment program and avoid any conflict.

"The true face of Rouhani has been revealed sooner than expected. Even if they hurry to deny his words - this is what the man thinks and this is the Iranian regime's plan of action," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Rouhani's words "must awaken the world from the illusion in which part of it is placed since the Iranian elections", he declared, saying Iran still aimed "to acquire nuclear weapons in order to threaten Israel, the Middle East and world peace".

"A nation that threatens to destroy the state of Israel must not be allowed to have weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Ahmadinejad addressed Israel on Qods Day in his last speech as president. "You planted wind in our region and you will reap the storm. I swear to God that a ferocious storm is coming and it will uproot the Zionist entity," Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted him as saying.

Obama, Democrats vow unified stance on debt

President Obama emerged from closed-door meetings with House and Senate Democrats on Wednesday with a new mantra for his focus the rest of this year: ?Jobs. Middle class. Growth.?

With Congress poised to leave for a five-week summer vacation at the end of this week, Democrats wanted to huddle and make sure they were on the same page before tackling the major spending and debt fights looming.

?One thing is very clear as we get into debates this fall ? we are united,? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters after the Democratic Caucus met with Mr. Obama in the lunch hour.

The president had met with House Democrats earlier in the day.

Congress is leaving town for its vacation without the urgency that usually characterizes the last week before summer break ? particularly in the first year of a new Congress. In 2011, lawmakers were scrambling to avert a debt crisis, and in 2009 they were trying to find the funds to replenish the Cash for Clunkers stimulus program.

This year, however, the deadline fights are all coming later, leaving both chambers to clean up some regular business before fleeing the stifling summer days that characterize Washington in August.

Democrats and Republicans have both signaled the battle lines for the upcoming fights: The GOP says it will not accept another debt increase without winning concessions, while the White House says it?s done negotiating over spending cuts that it says are keeping the economy down.

Wednesday?s latest growth figures suggest that there is plenty of room for work.

The economy grew at a rate of 1.7 percent, measured by gross domestic product, between April and June. But the bad news came in the January to March period, which saw its growth tally revised downward from 1.8 percent to just 1.1 percent.

Senate panel looking at limits on surveillance

He says lawmakers should be more focused on whether the NSA's collection of the phone records of millions of Americans is constitutional. (AP) ? Senators are questioning top Obama administration officials about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs for the first time since the House narrowly rejected a proposal last week to effectively shut down the NSA's secret collection of hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records.

The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday will include testimony from the No. 2 officials at the Justice Department, FBI and NSA, plus the top lawyer for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. It will also include testimony from James G. Carr, a senior federal judge who previously served on the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and who recently urged Congress to give such judges more discretion and authority to appoint lawyers to serve the interests of the public.

Carr has said to do otherwise "puts basic constitutional protections at risk and creates doubts about the legitimacy of the court's work and the independence and integrity of its judges."

The government acknowledged last week in a letter to Congress that there have been an unspecified number of "compliance problems" in following the rules put in place governing the secret collection of Americans' phone records. The director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said no intentional or bad-faith rules violations were found.

Since the NSA surveillance became public two months ago, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has introduced legislation that would allow the government to obtain phone records only when it can establish that the information is relevant to an authorized investigation and is linked to a foreign terrorist group or foreign power. Leahy's bill would enhance oversight by expanding reporting requirements to Congress and would add further court review of surveillance programs. The measure also would add a new sunset provision for national security letters, which are issued by government agencies such as the FBI to gather information such as phone numbers dialed or sender or recipient email addresses.

Former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden leaked documents revealing the NSA's phone records program. Snowden also leaked details of a second NSA program called PRISM, which forces major Internet firms to turn over detailed contents of communications such as emails, video chats and pictures.

Last year, the Judiciary Committee approved Leahy's measure to bolster limits on surveillance. Ultimately, Congress passed a long-term extension of intelligence programs without any new reforms.

Last week's House vote of 217-205 was significant not only because of the narrowness of the victory for the Obama administration, but because it created unusual political coalitions. Libertarian-leaning conservatives and liberal Democrats pressed for change against the Republican establishment and Congress' national security experts.

Backing the NSA program were 134 Republicans and 83 Democrats, including House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who typically does not vote, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Rejecting the administration's last-minute pleas to spare the surveillance operation were 94 Republicans and 111 Democrats.

Canon's 1080p Legria mini camcorder makes it easy to film yourself

Though we got tired of the word "selfie" in about 1/8000th of a second, it's true that snapping yourself can be tricky, especially on video. Canon wants to aid and abet such vanity with the Legria mini, a 1080p camcorder with an ultra-wide angle lens, flipscreen and built-in stand. To make sure that we, er, you look as good as possible, Canon's equipped it with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, DIGIC DV 4 processor, 12.8-megapixel still shooter, stereo audio and 160 degree wide lens (170 degrees for stills). You'll also get built-in WiFi, an iOS app, DLNA support, time-lapse, slow motion and mirror image recording and playback. There's even a decidedly HTC Zoe-like feature which takes a four second video when you snap a photo, and assembles them together when you're ready. All of that should help keep your Vine, Video on Instagram and other filmic pipelines full. Check the PR and video after the break for more.

Trends in Real Estate Investing | Hello Real Estate Pty Ltd

So,?WHO is investing in Real Estate.? The #1 love of the average and not-so average Aussie is property.? A recent report tells all:

  1. Majority of property investors are married professionals
  2. Majority of property investors have on average 2 properties
  3. The average age is between 25 to 44 years
  4. One in five investors plan to buy another property over next 12 months or so
  5. The older Aussies 55+ are dragging the chain ? as only 21% of people over 55 own an investment property.? Even with the the increase of SMSF this number is staggeringly low

So, my take on this is simple.? You are never too old or too young to start on your investing journey into the property market.? The GenY?s should start embarking on that journey now ? and need encouragement. Not every property needs to be negatively geared, which is the biggest fear of the early?investors.? The GenY?s don?t want to give up living a social life and enjoying travel and friends.? With a positively geared property they can have both an investment strategy AND a life

Older Aussies can also jump onto the investment property journey.? They have held off in order to pay off their own home, gets kids into uni, free themselves of debt.? With SMSFs owning an investment property couldn?t be easier.? Again, a positively geared property can take away the fear of struggling to manage cash flow.

With interest rates low, and rents high ? there has never been a better time to embark on a solid investment journey into Australia Property.

Filmmaker's wit enlivens 'My Lunches With Orson' ? Artesia News

?My Lunches With Orson: Conversations Between Henry Jaglom and Orson Welles? (Metropolitan Books), by Peter Biskind

Orson Welles would enter the trendy Los Angeles restaurant Ma Maison through the kitchen, thus avoiding being seen arriving by wheelchair. His girth as wide as his talent, the director of 1941?s ?Citizen Kane? sat in a mammoth restaurant chair with his toy poodle, Kiki. Eager for almost any kind of work in the early 1980s, the one-time boy wonder behind the film regularly declared the greatest ever made had become a living symbol of how Hollywood could abandon its geniuses.

For years, the writer and director Henry Jaglom joined Welles at Ma Maison nearly every week. He was Welles? unofficial agent and representative, trying to get his friend?s movie projects off the ground. Over lunch, they discussed practically anything ? Welles? weight was out of bounds ? and Welles offered seemingly unguarded observations, at times humorous and profane, in spite of the presence of a tape recorder.

On actors: ?English actors are more modest than Americans, because they?ve never had (?method? acting teacher) Lee Strasberg to teach ?em that they know better than the director.?

On gossip columnists Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper: ?You don?t know the power those two cows had in this town! People opened the paper, ignoring Hitler and everything else, and turned right to Louella and Hedda.?

On the Irish: ?They hate themselves. I lived for years in Ireland. The majority of intelligent Irishmen dislike Irishmen, and they?re right.?

Decades after Welles? death in 1985, author Peter Biskind presents the transcripts from those recorded lunches. Welles appears uncensored ? and it?s not a pretty sight. Fascinating, amusing and eye-opening, to be sure, but ?My Lunches With Orson? is yet more evidence that one of the wonderful minds of theater and film was in a creative death spiral in his final years. Not that Welles didn?t have ideas, but he couldn?t find backers for them ? and that was a dark weight on his mind.

Lightening up their chats are his tart appraisals of stars like Laurence Olivier (?seriously stupid?), Norma Shearer (?one of the most minimally talented ladies ever to appear on the silver screen?), Humphrey Bogart (?both a coward and a very bad fighter?), Spencer Tracy (?I hate him so ? he?s one of those bitchy Irishmen?) and Joan Fontaine (?just a plain old bad actor ? she?s got four readings, and two expressions, and that?s it?).

He has praise for many others, including Clark Gable (not bright but ?terribly nice?) and Carole Lombard (?I adored her?). Although he appeared memorably in movies such as ?The Third Man? and ?Touch of Evil,? Welles considers his own acting an amateur pursuit.

Welles? taste in movies can be surprising. Among his many dislikes are the American films of Alfred Hitchcock, whom he considered burdened by egotism and laziness. Of ?Rear Window,? one of Hitchcock?s most popular films, he says, ?Everything is stupid about it.? Worse, he adds, is ?Vertigo.? Fortunately for his sake, Welles did not live to see ?Vertigo? replace ?Citizen Kane? last year as the best film ever in the decennial Sight & Sound poll of film critics.

In a lean and lively essay, Biskind captures the essence of Welles and the conundrum posed by his artistic ups and downs. The star of this engaging book, as he was in nearly everything he did, remains Welles. Like Falstaff, a character he loved to play, he is witty and vain ? and, in the end, a tragic figure.

'King of the Hill' voice actor dies at 67

TV

Dennis Burkley with Will Smith in an episode of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Actor Dennis Burkley, who voiced the middle-school principal on "King of the Hill" and played Fred Sanford's partner on a sequel to "Sanford and Son," has died at age 67.

Burkley died in his sleep Sunday in Sherman Oaks, Calif., his agent told The Hollywood Reporter.

His son Shawn told the magazine, "He was a great father as well as a great actor. He stayed with my mom in Hollywood where marriages don?t last very long. He cared deeply about his family."

Burkley, who was born in Los Angeles but raised in Texas, played the recurring character of Carl Moss, a high-school friend of Hank Hill and principal of Tom Landry Middle School, on Fox's long-running animated show "King of the Hill." The show ran from 1997 to 2010.

Burkley got his acting break in 1976 thanks to his other job -- cleaning pools.

"As luck would have it, one of the pools I cleaned belonged to director Bob Rafelson," Burkley wrote on his website. "Bob cast me in my first film, 'Stay Hungry,' along with another unknown, Arnold Schwarzenegger."

He went on to numerous parts on television and in film, but Burkley said his big break came when a role on "Maude" brought him to the attention of famed producer Norman Lear, who cast him in a recurring role as truck driver Mac on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman."

One of his most memorable roles was that of Fred Sanford's junk-business partner in the two-season sitcom "Sanford," NBC's 1980 attempt to revive the 1970s hit. Burkley played Cal Pettie, whose character essentially replaced Sanford's son Lamont after actor Demond Wilson chose not to reprise his role from the original show. "Sanford" never caught on as its predecessor had and was canceled before completing a second season.

The heavyset actor played Dozer, a biker who never speaks, in the 1985 film "Mask,"

In addition to "Sanford," Burkley appeared on numerous television shows, including "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Emergency," "The Rockford Files," "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "My Name Is Earl." One character he played on "Hill Street Blues," criminal Sonny Crockett, became more famous when the show's creator re-used the name for Don Johnson's unrelated role on "Miami Vice."

He made his directorial debut with 2005's "Repetition," an independent film about acting students. It was named a best feature film winner in that year's Appalachian Film Festival. He also taught acting classes.

Burkley is survived by his wife Laura and two children.

Sudan President Bashir's trip to Nigeria sees outcry

')
//-->

Rights organizations are criticizing Sudan President Omar al-Bashir's inclusion in a Nigeria health summit given his alleged role in the genocide in Darfur, according to BBC News.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), of which Nigeria is a member, put out an arrest warrant for Bashir in March on charges of genocide and other atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region. However, the ICC relies on national governments to make the arrest in the court's name because it has no police, said Human Rights Watch.

Many countries have refused to receive Bashir, but "Nigeria has the shameful distinction of being the first West African country to welcome ICC fugitive Sudanese president," Elise Keppler of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch said on Monday, according to All Africa.

The Sudanese leader was even given a full guard of honor when he arrived in?Abuja for a health summit on HIV/AIDS organized by the African Union, said the BBC's Nigeria correspondent, Chris Ewokor.

Rights organizations want Bashir arrested, not given state honors. Bashir denies his involvement in the Darfur conflict that killed an estimated 200,000 people, according to Reuters.

Chino Obiagwu of the Nigerian Coalition for the International Criminal Court said Nigeria is breaking international law by receiving Bashir, and rights activists there vowed to take the matter to court on Monday, reported AllAfrica.

"It sends a very wrong signal to other African countries that the International Criminal Court could be ignored, Obiagwu told the BBC's Focus on Africa program, saying the move suggests "African nations don't need to co-operate with the ICC and if that impression continues, then we're going to have serious problems dealing with impunity in Africa."

Nigerian presidential spokesman Reuben Abati deferred critics to the?African Union's 2009 decision not to cooperate with ICC rulings, saying:?"The Sudanese president came for an A[frican] U[nion] event and the AU has taken a position on the ICC arrest order, so Nigeria has not taken action different from the AU stand," reported Reuters.

The ICC has been accused of an over-emphasis on crimes in Africa, a charge the organization denies.

Sleep Critically Affects Childhood Brain Development

2012-07-16-eh_logo.jpg
By Robert Rosenberg

In this month?s British Medical Journal, there's a report on a study demonstrating the relationship of sleep to brain development in kids. It is called the Millennium cohort Study, and it followed 11,000 children. Those children who demonstrated irregular bedtimes up to the age of three were the most negatively affected when it came to reading, math skills and spatial awareness. When followed over time, they continued to lag developmentally even by the age of seven -- and girls more than boys. The authors concluded that the first three years of life seem to be a particularly sensitive time for sleep and its relationship to brain development.

The findings are similar to a smaller Canadian study published in the journal Sleep in 2008. This study found that children sleeping less than ten hours a night before age three were more likely to exhibit language and reading problems as well as ADHD. In both studies, these problems persisted despite improvement in total sleep time after the age of three.

What we are seeing here is the relationship of sleep to neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity relates to structural and functional changes in the brain brought on by training and experience. It is the ability of the brain to change by increasing brain tissue called gray matter and to alter the brain circuits called synapses. We know that adults are capable of these changes but on a much smaller scale. It would appear that the most crucial period for these kinds of brain changes is probably during the first three years of life. In fact, that is one of the reasons that children can recover from head trauma much more completely than adults can. It also explains the fact that if the entire left hemisphere is removed in a three or four year old, that child can still develop normal language skills. This is not possible in an adult.

Why Your Child Needs Lots of Sleep
So how does sleep enter into this? We know that young children exhibit the largest amount of slow wave (deep) sleep. Recent studies have correlated this slow wave sleep with brain development. In fact, certain types of brain scans have demonstrated that regional areas of the brain receiving these slow waves show increased growth and development in response. REM sleep is also important and plays a major role in developing the visual related parts of our brain. Finally, recent works show the production during sleep of cerebral proteins required for these changes.

So what is the take home message of these studies? Probably that sleep is much more important in childhood brain development than we ever realized before. It is very important that your toddler get sufficient sleep -- and that, as the British study showed, you establish a regular bedtime to which your child adheres. His or her future may depend upon it.

Rising costs force mushroom farmer to cut 10 jobs

Topics:? agriculture, clarks mushrooms, farmer, farming, mushrooms

    Trevor Clark.
    Trevor Clark. Iain Curry

A LOCAL mushroom farmer has pulled out of the industry and cut 10 jobs, as a result of flat produce prices unable to counteract the ever-increasing cost of production.

Clark's Mushrooms, at Diddillibah, had grown from just two cold rooms to 32 over 15 years, and recently was producing four tonnes of mushrooms a week.

But increasing wages, increases in superannuation contributions, weekend penalty rates, and particularly a 22.5% increase in electricity costs, has led them to make the heartbreaking decision to close the mushroom farm.

"It's pretty much a sign of the times - everything is going up and mushrooms are not," farm manager Trevor Clark said.

"It costs $20 to grow a box of mushrooms, and most of the time we're lucky to get that for a box.

"There's a few farms that are struggling but are still going, but we got to the point that we were just breaking even, and it's not worth working seven days a week, 6am to 6pm, to break even."

Mr Clark said mushrooms were a fickle crop grown in cold rooms of around 20 degrees C, which are run continually, and pending electricity price increases would add an estimated $1500 to the quarterly power bill. He added that staffing costs, including compulsory superannuation contributions and weekend penalty rates, all added to operating costs, but prices could not be increased.

"We can't turn around and say these mushrooms are more expensive because they were picked on a Sunday," Mr Clark said.

"The main thing is the government changing the rules every five minutes - they say the cost of living is going up so we'll make the employer pay more, and we can't turn around and charge more, so it's a vicious circle."

Mr Clark said the farm would switch to small crop vegetable farming, which would employ only himself and his fianc?.

Lady Gaga to release new "ARTPOP" album in November

(Reuters) - Pop star Lady Gaga will release her next album, "ARTPOP", on November 11, a statement on the U.S. singer's website said on Friday.

The 27-year-old "Born This Way" singer - who cancelled part of a tour earlier this year to undergo hip surgery - will release a single from the new album on August 19.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, calls her fans "little monsters" and will release a social media app ahead of the album on September 1, which the statement said would seek to make connections between music, art, fashion and technology.

"Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ART culture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition", said the statement, referring to late U.S. pop artist Andy Warhol.

The Grammy-winning singer first rose to prominence in 2008 with the release of her album "Fame" and is well known for her outrageous costumes and provocative music videos.

McGill's Barber scores as Canada shocks USA at Nations Cup rugby tourney in England

McGill University:LONG EATON, England - July 12, 2013 - Emily Barber, a McGill University sophomore from Fenelon Falls, Que., scored a second-half try as Canada shocked the United States 25-15 to open the Nations Cup under-20 women's rugby tournament at Trent College in England, Thursday.

Barber, a 19-year-old management sophomore, tallied Canada's final try to give her side a commanding 25-10 lead after the conversion.

The U.S. opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the boot of Meya Bizer, who converted a penalty just to the left of the posts. The 3-0 lead was shortlived however, as Paige Ferries of Red Deer, Alta., scored a try, sprinting in from 15 yards. The play was converted by Jessica Neilson from out wide. Neilson's leg was in use again shortly after as the U.S. was penalized for hands in the scrum. The flyhalf kicked Canada into a 10-3 lead.

American prop Hope Rogers then forced her way over the line for a try and Anne Peterson's conversion knotted the score at 10-10.

Nadia Popov of Newmarket, Ont., and Barber added second-half tries to put the game out of reach.

The second half started like the first at a frantic pace and after a strong 20-minute push by Canada, a quick eight-man pick and charge led to Popov crashing over for a try next to the posts. Neilson added the conversion to give the Canucks a 17-10 lead after 50 minutes.

Some mistimed American defensive rushing led to a penalty, which was easily converted by Neilson for a 20-10 lead. After a penalty kick to the corner gave Canada a 22-10 advantage, Barber gave them a commanding 25-10 after forcing her way into the end zone from a lineout driving maul.

Bizer rounded out the scoring for the u.S. by running wide for an easy try.

The Canadian squad will have two days of rest before meeting England, the two-time defending tourney champions, on Sunday.

"It was absolutely incredible, standing there singing our anthem for the first time and the whole team really came together," said Neilson, a native of North Vancouver, B.C., who added a pair of conversions to finish with a game-high 10 points.

"(It) was a battle... we persevered in the first 10 minutes of the second half and got two quick scores and continued to focus on defence," said Team Canada head coach Sandro Fiorino, who gave credit to the entire team for their strong play but praised the defensive efforts of captain Sara Kaljuvee and Nadia Popov to keep Canada in the lead.

"I was happy with the tackling. We played strong defensively. The end goal is to take a look at the game film, make the adjustments that we need to make. We have to fix our scrums and our lineouts."

The Americans will face South Africa in their next game on Sunday (July 14).

"This is a great learning experience," said U.S. head coach Danielle Miller. "We dominated up front and had enough possession to score more points than we did. When you make mistakes and don't take your chances, at this level, you'll be punished, and that's exactly what Canada did today, and we congratulate them for that. We'll regroup, recover, and we're all confident there's plenty more to come from this team."

90 jobs at risk at Sheffield Remploy site

    Source: www.thestar.co.uk --- Thursday, July 11, 2013
Around 90 Jobs are at risk at Sheffield?s Remploy factory after a company bidding to buy the Sheffield Road site pulled out. Barnsley-based Metalliform, which makes school furniture, was seeking to take over Remploy?s three furniture factories at Sheffield, Neath and Blackburn. But the company has now decided not to proceed. James Stribley, GMB organiser at Remploy, said workers were ?disappointed? and had been left fearing for their futures. ?Unless a new buyer comes forward, many of our members look like spending their life on benefits,? he added. Remploy has told Sheffield MPs it will contact other companies who previously expressed an interest in the furniture factories to see if they remain interested. Sheffield South East Labour MP Clive Betts said: ?I don?t know why Metalliform has withdrawn - although I don?t think it?s the end of the road for Sheffield Remploy.? Brightside and Hillsborough Labour MP David Blunkett added: ?Clive and I will both be seeking reassurance that a new preferred bidder does not pull out.? The Government is ending its subsidy to Remploy after a report by a disabled charity recommended the money would be better spent helping more people into mainstream Jobs. Remploy sites are being closed or sold. In a statement, Remploy said: ?As can happen during the due diligence phase, Metalliform have now advised that they are unable to continue their bid. Mini-golf comes alive at new museum exhibit & at 18-hole Palmetto course

Ophelia Bunuel stands at the putting green of the Riviera Country Club?s signature hole, No. 13, and prepares her swing. She hopes for a hole-in-one.

So does her mother Yvette Bunuel, who stands at her side and offers assistance. The golf club is almost as tall as Ophelia. After all, she?s just 3 years old and both mom and daughter are all smiles as they enjoy their outing.

Happily, there isn?t a line of angry adult members breathing down Ophelia?s neck or complaining about little kids on the course.

That?s because this isn?t the real Riviera No. 13 but a charming re-creation and part of the Coral Gables Museum?s new mini-golf exhibit, which plays off actual golf spots and landmarks in the city. The exhibit opened July 5 and will be open for play through September.

At the exhibit, there?s the Ole Biltmore No. 7 and its bridge traversing the Coral Gables Waterway?yes, you can walk across it as you would at the real course?and the recently restored Alhambra Water Tower sits here, too, with the golf hole just outside its center.

Other holes include a re-creation of the city?s seasonal Farmer?s Market with green frogs climbing bales of hay to get to the market. Golf pro Tracy Kerdyk, daughter of the Gables former mayor, the late Bill Kerdyk, designed a course, sponsored by her city commissioner-brother?s realty firm. Kerdyk?s vision comes complete with sand traps shaped like feet.

?She really did her research,? says museum director Christine Rupp.

At The Swamp, a massive blue University of Florida gator looms large over Sebastian, the University of Miami?s comparatively tiny stuffed mascot. Here, you putt into the gator?s yawning maw and hope the ball winds its way to the hole near the creature?s tail. This hole took Adriana Alvarez, 10, five strokes to clear. ?Some of them are so complicated,? the fifth-grader said, eager to try again.

Wish You Were Here, meantime, is a collection of oversized postcards of Gables landmarks like the Venetian Pool.

On that one, a hole-in-one is nearly impossible, laughs Rupp. The cards block easy access to the hole.

But dozens of people are trying. Some are lured to the museum?s three-month, playable miniature golf exhibit to stoke memories of an activity that has largely disappeared from the South Florida landscape.

Then there are youngsters like Ophelia and her brother Augustin, 1, who are far too young to have any memories of the game, which, like traditional golf, has clubs, holes and traps and, in some cases, a full 18-hole course. The objective is the same?to sink your ball in the hole using as few strokes as possible.

?I love local history stuff, so this is great,? said the senior Augustin Bunuel as he guided his year-old son at the Gables Water Tower hole.

?My husband saw this mini-golf thing and thought it would be fun for the kids,? Yvette Bunuel said. ?They incorporate art history around the museum so you are learning while you are doing [the mini- golf] so this is reinforcing the history, especially for the kids, so it?s beautiful.?

For Juan Manuel, 10, it?s a way to get a feel for the traditional game.

?I think it?s really nice and kind of cool that people can have a replica of all the golf courses and test it out and see if they like it,? says Juan, a fifth-grader at George Washington Carver Middle School in Coral Gables.
