And They're Off! - Kids run flat race at Commonwealth Day Sports

On Monday, March 12 The Ivan Dawson Primary School (IDPS) will continue a cultural tradition in the village of Cane Garden Bay with its eclectic blend of sports and culture on full display on Commonwealth Day at the school?s grounds located in Cane Garden Bay.

Commonwealth Day (formerly called Empire Day), is a day when the United Kingdom and many of its territories and former territories celebrate their shared heritage and their contribution to positive global development.? Here in the BVI, many of the Territory?s public schools traditionally held their day of sports and activities on Commonwealth Day but presently, the Ivan Dawson Primary School is one of the few remaining schools to hold its sports day on that holiday and in the school?s home community.

?The PTA and the Cane Garden Bay Community have been fighting to keep this tradition alive despite pressure to go the way of the other schools and have the event at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in Road Town on a weekday.? This year although those options were considered, by majority decision of the PTA with the support of the community, it was decided that we would continue the tradition in Cane Garden Bay.? Additionally, we try to ensure that our Inter-primary Sports Track Team get in practices at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds to help them get accustomed to running at that facility which should enable them to be competitive during the annual Inter-primary School Sports,? said Ivan Dawson Primary School Parent Teachers Association (IDPSPTA) President, Keith Dawson.

The day?s activities will start with the traditional march at 9:00 a.m., where the IDPS students will parade throughout the village from Arundel at Cane Garden Bay?s western end to the foot of Ross Hill to the east.

According to Clifton ?Tigere? Burke, the Chairman of the IDPSPTA Fundraising Committee, ?The march is a tribute to our community which has always supported this annual event, and we feel it is part of the tradition that those individuals and businesses look forward to, as the children make their way through the village passing the homes and businesses along the way.?

After the march and a brief ceremony saluting the Commonwealth and the purpose of the celebration, the races will commence between the two competing houses, RHYMER and DAWSON (the defending champions).? The competition will feature cultural and traditional races such as lime and spoon, shoe race, needle & thread, three-legged race, bucket race and late for school race in addition to the flat races.? Additionally, food will be on sale and will feature a variety of local favourites including conch soup, corn pork, corn fish and maubie, all at reasonable prices.

The day?s activities will culminate with the tug of war events featuring contests between the two houses and the always highly anticipated tug of war match that tests the strength of the men versus the women in attendance.

?Commonwealth Day Sports at the Ivan Dawson Primary School grounds in Cane Garden Bay will be an enjoyable celebration of culture, fun and wholesome family entertainment and therefore we extend an invitation to all persons present in the BVI to? come out and enjoy the day with us,? said Mr. Burke.
