Deneice Arthurton is an expert at solo world travel. She is a freelance writer and surfer who has been traveling the world for the last 9 years. Here is her story in her own words:
In 2003, after an all-too-close encounter with my own mortality, I sold my house, gave away my business and possessions, tucked my surf board under my arm and set out into the world to find adventure. Almost a decade later I am still doing that, still getting lost and found, still living a life which strikes me every single day as a blessed one........and discovering that the world is enormous.
My initial forays into the world of travel were undertaken with a big burly man by my side ? my long term partner and playmate Chris. When our relationship ended, after dusting my heartbroken self down, I wanted to carry on traveling and surfing but I was totally terrified. What's more, in my 40s, I was no longer young.
My answer at that time was to find a voluntary work placement in Thailand to make my initial solo female travel a little less daunting. I can still remember the total feeling of paralyzing fear as my plane took off ? I had never felt so lonely in my whole life. Little did I know at the time that it was to be the beginning of something beautiful and I haven't looked back since.
Where will I go next? Who knows......... somewhere in the world. Deneice Arthurton, solo female backpacker....Lucky me!
